In federal leaders’ debates, these are the topics set to dominate – National

Canada’s relationship with the United States and President Donald Trump will likely dominate this week’s leaders’ debates for the federal election, but experts say there will be other issues to watch for. The leaders of the Liberals, Conservatives, New Democrats and Bloc Québécois will gather in Montreal Wednesday evening for the campaign’s only French-language debate, followed by the English-language debate on Thursday. The federal debate commission rescinded an invitation to the Green Party, saying that “the Commission concludes that because the Green Party of Canada has intentionally reduced the number of candidates running in the election for strategic reasons, it no longer meets the intention of the participation criteria to justify inclusion in the leaders’ debates.”You can find detai...

How Apple Plans to Improve Its AI Models While Protecting User Privacy

Even the most loyal Apple users will admit that the company is lagging behind when it comes to AI, with Siri's big Apple Intelligence upgrade now officially delayed (having been heavily promoted throughout last year). In a new blog post, Apple outlines some of the ways it's hoping to get back on track. One of the potential reasons for Apple's generative AI struggles may be that it prioritizes user privacy a lot more than the likes of OpenAI and Google. Apple doesn't gather any user data to train its large language models or LLMs (though it has trained its models on free text on the web), and relies heavily on synthetic data to produce AI text from prompts and from existing writing. The problem with synthetic data is, well, its artificiality. It lacks the nuance and variation of human writing...

Extreme heat may raise risk of schizophrenia, depression: Study

Rising temperatures may not only affect physical health, but could also increase the burden of mental and behavioural disorders (MBD) like schizophrenia and depression by almost 50 per cent by 2050, according to a new study.  The research led by the University of Adelaide highlights the urgent need to act now to protect mental health as the climate warms. Published in the journal Nature Climate Change, the study shows that high temperatures contributed to an annual loss of 8,458 disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), representing 1.8 per cent of the total MBD burden in Australia. Young people aged 15 to 44 are particularly affected, with most losses linked to living with poor mental health. "The detrimental impacts of climate change on good mental health and emotional states have been...

Israeli troops will stay in Gaza, Lebanon and Syria indefinitely: minister – National

Israel’s defense minister said Wednesday that troops will remain in so-called security zones in the Gaza Strip, Lebanon and Syria indefinitely, remarks that could further complicate talks with Hamas over a ceasefire and hostage release. Israeli forces have taken over more than half of Gaza in a renewed campaign to pressure Hamas to release hostages after Israel ended their ceasefire last month. Israel has also refused to withdraw from some areas in Lebanon following a ceasefire with the Hezbollah militant group last year, and it seized a buffer zone in southern Syria after rebels overthrew President Bashar Assad in December.“Unlike in the past, the (Israeli military) is not evacuating areas that have been cleared and seized,” Defense Minister Israel Katz said in a statement. The military “...

Saif Ali Khan dishes out on how to stay relevant in the Gen Z fashion space

As the exciting trailer of "Jewel Thief - The Heist Begins" reached the audience on Monday, Saif Ali Khan reflected on predicting the Gen Z trends.   Claiming that it is very difficult to predict trends, Saif stressed that if one strongly feels something, chances are that people will agree with you. Speaking during the trailer launch event, the `Omkara` actor shared "I think if you follow yourself- clothes for example- I had a sense of fashion because it`s what I believe in my heart. So, if you strongly feel something, chances are people will agree with you, but if you try and imagine what anybody else would want you`ll fail because it is impossible to do that." Additionally, speaking about the film, the producers shared, “As filmmakers, we’re constantly exploring new ways to tell stori...

New oral antibiotic as effective as standard Gonorrhoea treatment: Lancet

A new pill has shown promise against antibiotic-resistant gonorrhoea - a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) -, according to a study published in the journal The Lancet.  Cases of drug-resistant gonorrhoea have been increasing rapidly in recent years. If not treated promptly, gonorrhoea can result in serious complications, especially for women, in whom it can lead to increased risks of ectopic pregnancy and infertility. The new pill gepotidacin - developed by British drugmaker GSK and currently approved to treat urinary tract infections - could be the new treatment against gonorrhoea, as there have been no new antibiotics since the 1990s for the STI. The phase 3 trial, including 622 patients, found that gepotidacin is as effective as the current standard treatment for treating t...
