Canadians cancelling U.S. business trips amid tariff, border tensions – National

First came the tariff threats. Then the annexation taunts. But it wasn’t until reports surfaced about foreigners detained while trying to enter the U.S. that Oscar Acosta decided to call off trips to three business conventions south of the border. He was “undeterred until last month” — when the tech CEO read about 35-year-old Canadian actress and entrepreneur Jasmine Mooney, who was held in detention for 12 days after reapplying for a work visa at the American border in San Diego and then banned from the U.S. for five years.“That struck fear in my heart,” said Acosta, who runs Ottawa-based startup Body M3canix, which makes fitness-tracking devices for extreme environments.“Being an entrepreneur as well, being from a visible minority — because my background is Hispanic — would I not run into...

From tariffs to crime, where do rural communities want election action? – National

There’s less than two weeks left in the federal election campaign, but while the parties have put out various announcements, some industry leaders and experts say rural communities are being left out. About 20 per cent of Canadians live in rural, remote, Indigenous, coastal or northern communities, according to Rural Economic Development Canada. These communities are facing many of the same issues as their urban counterparts: health care shortages, crime rates and the impact of tariffs on important sectors. The way those issues impact rural communities, though, can be very different.“They’re discussing it as if how it looks and what the solutions would be are going to be the same in all places, which is incorrect,” said Sarah-Patricia Breen, the B.C. innovation chair in rural economic develo...

Babies, kids` mattresses with brain-harming chemicals may raise health risks

A team of Canadian researchers has found plasticisers called phthalates, flame retardants, and other harmful chemicals in mattresses of babies and young children who are likely to breathe and absorb these while sleeping, increasing several health risks.  Researchers from the University of Toronto said these chemicals are linked to neurological and reproductive problems, asthma, hormone disruption, and cancer. "Sleep is vital for brain development, particularly for infants and toddlers. However, our research suggests that many mattresses contain chemicals that can harm kids’ brains,” said Miriam Diamond, Professor at the University of Toronto. “This is a wake-up call for manufacturers and policymakers to ensure our children’s beds are safe and support healthy brain development,” she adde...

Ali Fazal on juggling between Rakt Bramhand & Prosit Roy’s next

Shapeshifting is a joy for any actor, but for Ali Fazal, navigating two different worlds is both exhilarating and mind-boggling. While the actor plays a king in Netflix’s fantasy drama Rakt Bramhand, he is also shooting for Amazon Prime Video’s gritty crime thriller helmed by Prosit Roy. “Rakt Bramhand is an expansive period drama, a genre I’ve never explored at this scale, while Prosit Roy’s thriller is raw and intense. The mental shift required between these projects is immense, but I thrive on unpredictability, and this phase is allowing me to explore the full spectrum of my craft,” says the actor. Rakt Bramhand is created by (from left) Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK  Fazal is currently juggling the two projects’ shoot in Mumbai. He notes that one day he is in heavy robes, walking throu...

Google No Longer Supports Android 12 or Android 12L

If you have a smartphone running Android 12 that can't upgrade past that version, I have some bad news: Google is dropping support for your phone. RIP Android 12As spotted by Android Authority, Google is no longer seeding security updates for devices running Android 12 and Android 12L. The company omitted the Android version from its April 2025 Android Security Bulletin, which notes security vulnerabilities Google has identified and patched, and as well as which versions of Android receive those patches. The company highlights Android 13, 14, and 15 across a number of different vulnerabilities, but not Android 12.The outlet isn't basing this news off these omissions alone: Android Authority reports that Google dropped support for Android 12 and 12L as of March 31, based on a source that sa...

Trump and U.S. trade war take spotlight in French leaders’ debate – National

In the French language election debate Wednesday night, the four main federal party leaders were asked to lay out policy priorities that have nothing with the United States. But the conversation quickly turned to the elephant in the room — Donald Trump — and how the leaders would deal with the U.S. president. The leaders began the debate by sparring over how to respond to the trade war with the United States and pitching themselves as the best one to negotiate with Trump.Poilievre said that on his first day in office, he would open negotiations with Trump on an agreement put an end to tariffs.“We can’t control Trump. So at the same time, we need to control what we can,” Poilievre said.“That means reversing the Liberal economic policies which have weakened our country, unlocking out (natural...

Chronic pain may raise risk of depression by four times: Study

People suffering from chronic pain -- or pain that lasts at least three months -- may be up to four times more likely to experience depression, according to a study.  Almost 30 per cent of people worldwide suffer from a chronic pain condition such as low back pain and migraines, and one in three of these patients also report co-existing pain conditions. The study published in the journal Science Advances shows that having chronic pain in multiple parts of the body was linked to a greater risk of depression than having pain at a single site. "Pain isn`t only physical," said Dustin Scheinost, Associate Professor of radiology and biomedical imaging at Yale School of Medicine (YSM). "Our study adds to the evidence that physical conditions can have mental health consequences," Scheinost add...

For example, someone living in an encampment who frequents a soup kitchen could get a letter of confirmation from that facility, said Benson.
