Sitting-rising test may predict death risk in middle-aged, older adults: Study

A test that checks how easily one sits on and rises from the floor could predict risk of death among middle-aged and older adults, according to a study. The `sitting-rising test` -- a non-aerobic fitness assessment of muscle strength, flexibility, balance, and body composition -- could add relevant clinical and predictive information to routine examinations of healthy and unhealthy individuals, researchers said. The team, including researchers from Exercise Medicine Clinic-CLINIMEX, Brazil, scored nearly 4,300 adults, aged 46-75 and who performed the test, from zero to five -- one point was deducted from five for each time a support of hand or knee was used, and 0.5 for an unsteadiness in movements. Over a typical follow-up period of 12 years, during which there were 665 deaths, the stu...

Experts highlight why diabetics need to be aware of foot gangrene

According to the World Health Organization, there were 830 million people living with diabetes in 2022, as compared to 200 million in 1990. This chronic, metabolic condition that affects millions of people worldwide may lead to other health complications if not diagnosed and treated on time. While the link between diabetes and health issues like obesity and vision problems is widely acknowledged, a lesser-known complication that may arise out of uncontrolled diabetes is foot gangrene. Dr Ashank Bansal, who is a vascular surgeon and interventional radiologist at Surana Sethia Hospital in Chembur, informs, “Foot gangrene occurs when blood flow to the foot is reduced, leading to tissue death due to a lack of oxygen, which further causes infection. People with uncontrolled blood sugar, nerve...

The Default iPhone Ringtone Has a New Sound in iOS 26

Despite a lengthy WWDC keynote, Apple didn't have time to advertise each and every new feature shipping with iOS 26. As such, we continue to learn about new features and smaller changes as beta testers explore the new OS. These testers have sniffed out one new addition that is small, but fun: Your iPhone is getting a new ringtone. Technically, it's getting a different version of an existing ringtone. At least, that's how Apple apparently sees things: Following the release of iOS 26 beta 2, Apple has, for the first time, added an alternate version of one of its signature ringtones—specifically, "Reflection," the default iOS ringtone that Apple originally introduced with the iPhone X. Provided Apple doesn't change things between now and the release of the final version of iOS 26, once you've...

This Massive Data Breach Shows Why We Need to Kill the Password Once and for All

Passwords are a staple of both the internet and computing at large. Even as new authentication protocols have emerged—from passkeys to biometrics—most of us use passwords to log into our daily accounts and websites using a code made up of letters, numbers, and symbols. The problem is, the password was really a product of its time, and doesn't really belong in the modern digital age. Cybersecurity threats have evolved so far beyond the capability of a password to protect from them that they have actually become a liability—even when you follow best practices for creating them and keeping them secure. Case in point: News of the latest data breach, one of the largest ever, in which researchers discovered not millions, but billions of passwords floating around on the web. Sixteen billion passwo...
