TikTok, the video-sharing platform owned by Chinese company ByteDance, will be shut down in the United States on Sunday unless it can find a new owner. American lawmakers argue its current proprietorship poses a national security threat. It comes after outgoing president Joe Biden signed legislation into law last April that would require the company to sell TikTok by January 19, 2025. His administration, along with members of Congress, have argued that the platform’s ownership compromises American national security because of the app’s tracking and data collection capabilities.
