U.S. election: How would Harris, Trump immigration plans impact Canada? – National

The close U.S. presidential election between Vice-President Kamala Harris and Donald Trump could be decided on the issue of immigration, and either result will have implications for Canada. While the economy has been identified as a top concern among American voters, immigration is not far behind, with more people saying they want a clampdown at the borders.Polling by Gallup has found a majority of Americans want immigration levels decreased. The number saying so — 55 per cent — is the highest since 2002. Although 64 per cent say immigration is an overall good thing for the country, that figure is the lowest in 10 years.Trump has based much of his campaign around tackling unauthorized or “illegal” immigration, with policy proposals including mass deportations and other severe crackdowns. A...

Photo: AFP An Israeli air strike on a single residential block killed nearly 100 people, Gaza's civil defence agency said, leaving rescuers scrambling through rubble for survivors as Israel pressed on with its offensives in Gaza and Lebanon. The latest bombing came as Israel faced a chorus of international criticism after its parliament voted overwhelmingly to ban UNRWA, the main United Nations aid agency working with Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. ‘It’s a cult’: Kiwis voting in US describe ‘nightmare’ election

Susan Cutforth moved to US 14 years ago and voted for Harris. Photo: Nick Monro/RNZ A New Zealander who has lived in the United States for 14 years says the election campaign is a "nightmare" and Donald Trump is a "fascist". Polls were showing Kamala Harris and Donald Trump were neck and neck in the critical southwest states of Arizona and Nevada. RNZ's Corin Dann caught up with a group of New Zealanders and Australians in an Irish pub in Phoenix, Arizona. Susan Cutforth, who has lived in the US for 14 years and was based in Phoenix, said the election campaign had been a "nightmare" to live through. Every move from the candidates and their allies matters in a race teetering on a knife edge | US News

One hundred days after becoming the Democratic Party's nominee for president, it was time for Kamala Harris to present her closing argument. With the White House as her backdrop and tens of thousands of supporters packing the outdoor arena, she set out her stall to the American public. What she offered was a binary choice; me or him, cohesion or chaos."On day one, if elected, Donald Trump will walk in with an enemies list. I will walk in with a to-do list," she said to huge cheers from the crowd. The Harris campaign had pointedly picked the Ellipse in Washington DC as the venue for this address. Just beyond the White House's south lawn, the garden was where Donald Trump spoke on 6 January 2021 before droves of his fans. Standing in almost the same spot as Ms Harris now was, he made false cla...

A rooftop firefight during the 2011 siege of the Kabul Intercontinental Hotel became a defining moment of New Zealand's role in the US-led war in Afghanistan. It was also a defining moment in Jamie Pennell's life. NZSAS operatives, coordinating with Afghan Crisis Response Unit personnel, were instrumental in clearing the building and rescuing civilians trapped inside, after Taliban insurgents attacked the hotel and began killing hostages. Pennell, who was among the SAS soldiers who battled their way to the top of the building, received the Gallantry Star for his leadin...
