New AI algorithm to predict risk of cardiovascular events, heart-related death

A team of researchers in South Korea has developed a novel artificial intelligence (AI)-based algorithm that uses electrocardiograph (ECG)2 data to predict the risk of cardiovascular events, and heart-related death.  To create the algorithm, the team from Inha University Hospital analysed standard 12-lead electrocardiograph (ECG)2 data taken from almost half a million cases. The novel algorithm can identify people most at risk of cardiovascular events and mortality by predicting the biological age of the heart, which is based on how the heart functions. For example, a person who is 50 but has poor heart health could have a biological heart age of 60, while someone aged 50 with optimal heart health could have a biological heart age of 40. “Our research showed that when the biological ag...

Amol Parashar: ‘The comedy we make doesn’t make everyone laugh’

After the third edition of Tripling in 2022, Amol Parashar returned to the screen early this year with Sweet Dreams, opposite Mithila Palkar. He will soon follow it up with TVF’s Gram Chikitsalaya, where he plays a doctor in a rural village. While the series has connotations similar to the hit series Panchayat, the actor swears that the story and treatment are distinct. Parashar also has a comedy film, Nausikhiye, with Abhimanyu Dassani that has yet to find a platform, but has got his parents’ seal of approval. In conversation with mid-day, the actor discusses his upcoming projects, why comedy is his favourite genre despite its challenges, and how OTT is neglecting a section of viewers. Edited excerpts from the interview. The year 2025 seems busy for you.The last release I had was the th...

Former Liberal Han Dong ‘disappointed’ to sit out federal campaign – National

Former Liberal MP Han Dong will not seek re-election after he says the party told him that they’d be running another candidate. Dong, the independent member for Don Valley North, says he’s “disappointed” that he won’t be running in the upcoming contest, but said he didn’t want to split the vote in the safely Liberal riding to give the party its best shot at winning.Dong stepped away from the Liberal caucus on March 22, 2023, after Global News, citing unnamed national security sources, published alleged details about his interactions with the Chinese consulate in Toronto. Dong reportedly had discussions with his party about returning to caucus since June 2023.“As many of you know, I had no choice but to leave the Liberal caucus about two years ago to try and clear my name in response to fal...

Dave Coulier opens up about cancer treatment after Stage 3 diagnosis – National

Full House alum Dave Coulier is recalling the toughest parts of his cancer treatment after receiving a diagnosis late last year. The American actor learned he had Stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma in November — a type of cancer that affects the lymphatic and immune systems — revealing that he first noticed symptoms in October after contracting a respiratory infection that caused swelling in his lymph nodes around his groin and armpits.“It swelled up immediately,” Coulier told Today in November. “I thought, ‘Wow, I’m either really sick, or my body’s really reacting to something.”Subsequent scans, along with a biopsy, led to a diagnosis. Within three days, Coulier was in treatment. He provided an update near the end of last year, telling NBC’s Today that in the five weeks following his diagnosis, ...

World-renowned Canadian doctor says NYU cancelled talk for being ‘anti-government’

A world-renowned Canadian doctor says her talk at New York University (NYU) was cancelled for being anti-government. Dr. Joanne Liu, an associate professor at McGill and the Université de Montréal, a pediatric emergency medicine physician at Sainte-Justine hospital and who formerly served as the international president of Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), told Global News she was left stunned after her scheduled lecture at NYU was abruptly cancelled by the university last week. She said her lecture was going to discuss humanitarian aid in a time of crises as well as the challenges aid workers have faced in Gaza and other war zones. Her presentation was also going to address the recent cuts to foreign aid, notably USAID, by President Trump‘s administration.“[I was told] that...

Just Stop Oil 2.0: Who are the protestors behind Youth Demand, the pro-Palestine climate activism group?

Just Stop Oil announced they would be stopping direct action after the government announced it would not be issuing licences for oil and gas explorations. This means no more soup thrown at paintings, no more sitting on motorways, and no more orange powder thrown across everything from Stonehenge to snooker tables. But anyone who thought all of that was over would be wrong, as another activist group appears to be taking up the mantle already.Youth Demand is a resistance campaign led by young people which is run by the same organisation as Just Stop Oil, called Umbrella. According to Umbrella, Youth Demand’s focus is on “making The Labour Party’s f***ery clear by exposing their complicity in genocide: the Palestinian genocide and the global genocide from burning fossil fuels.” The group was ...

Liberals, NDP pitch housing promises as Conservatives eye energy corridor – National

As the second week of the federal campaign gets underway, the Liberals and NDP were touting housing promises from the campaign trail while Conservatives focused on plans for an energy corridor. Liberal Leader Mark Carney says his government would double Canada’s rate of residential construction housing over the next decade to nearly 500,000 new homes per year. The plan announced Monday would create a new federal housing entity that the Liberals say would oversee affordable housing construction, speed up construction and provide financing to homebuilders.Carney said the new agency, Build Canada Homes, would act as a developer to build affordable housing at scale, including housing on public lands, and would develop and manage projects. He said the “lean, mission-driven organization” would pro...

Liberal candidate to stay in race despite China bounty remark: Carney

Liberal Party Leader Mark Carney is facing growing calls to remove an Ontario candidate from running in the federal election after he told people at a news conference they could claim a foreign bounty on another candidate by bringing the individual “to Toronto’s Chinese consulate.” Paul Chiang, who is seeking re-election as the candidate for the Markham-Unionville riding, apologized last week for comments he made in January about Joe Tay, a Conservative candidate for Don Valley North, who had a bounty placed on him by Hong Kong police last December. The Toronto Association for Democracy in China said in a news release that Chiang told Chinese-language newspaper Ming Pao at a news conference three months ago that everyone at the event could claim the bounty “if you bring him to Toronto’s Chi...

France’s Marine Le Pen barred from seeking public office for 5 years – National

A French court on Monday barred Marine Le Pen from seeking public office for five years, with immediate effect, for embezzlement — a hammer blow to the far-right leader’s presidential hopes and an earthquake for French politics. Although Le Pen can appeal the verdict, such a move won’t suspend her ineligibility, which could rule her out of the 2027 presidential race. The court ruling was a political as well as a judicial temblor for France, hobbling one of the leading contenders to succeed President Emmanuel Macron at the end of his second and final term, scheduled to last into 2027.Le Pen herself wasn’t around to hear the chief judge pronounce the sentence that threw her career into a tailspin. By then, she’d already strode out of the courtroom, when the judge first indicated that Le Pen w...
