Carney advised to push back on Trump in April call if provoked: memo – National

Prime Minister Mark Carney was counselled to push back during an April call with Donald Trump if the U.S. president revived his complaints about border security, fentanyl from Canada or low defence spending, a newly released memo shows. Federal officials prepared the internal memo to guide Carney’s conversation with Trump following the Liberal party’s April 28 election victory.A concise Canadian summary of the April 29 call, released that day, says Trump congratulated Carney and that the leaders agreed on the importance of working together — as independent, sovereign nations — for their mutual betterment.“To that end, the leaders agreed to meet in person in the near future,” reads Canada’s official readout from the meeting. The memo drafted for Carney, obtained by The Canadian Press through...

Ahead of budget, Canadians want cost of living help, not deficits: poll – National

As the federal government prepares to release a budget expected to see major new investments and spending along with a higher deficit, Canadians say they’re most concerned about measures to reduce their cost of living, according to a new poll. The Ipsos poll conducted exclusively for Global News found 42 per cent of respondents want the budget, set to be tabled in Parliament on Tuesday, to prioritize helping with the increasing cost of everyday expenses. That number far outpaces Prime Minister Mark Carney’s stated priorities for transforming the Canadian economy — including investing in the Canadian military and national defence (15 per cent), funding major projects and infrastructure (15 per cent), and even measures to mitigate the impact of U.S. tariffs (25 per cent). At the same time, thr...

Dark chocolate, berries may help boost memory and relieve stress: Study

Struggling with memory and stress issues? A bite of dark chocolate or a handful of berries may help boost your memory levels and also cut down stress, according to an animal study.   The improved memory and cognition may be due to flavanols, found abundantly in cocoa and berries, said the team from Shibaura Institute of Technology, Japan. The study, published in the journal Current Research in Food Science, demonstrated that flavanol intake can trigger wide-ranging physiological responses resembling those induced by exercise -- functioning as a moderate stressor that activates the central nervous system and enhances attention, arousal, and memory. Flavanols also protect against neuronal damage. “Stress responses elicited by flavanols in this study are similar to those elicited by physic...

Wankhede contended that the web series is not a work of fiction but a "personal vendetta disguised as satire", orchestrated to malign his reputation following the 2021 Cordelia Cruise drug case involving Shah Rukh Khan`s son, Aryan Khan. In the rejoinder, Wankhede alleged that the character of a government officer depicted in the series was deliberately modelled on him, citing striking resemblances in appearance, speech, and...

Ontario woman named national Silver Cross Mother

OTTAWA – When Nancy Payne lays a wreath on Remembrance Day at the National War Memorial, it won’t be the first time she’s represented mothers of Canadian soldiers who have died in combat. But it will be her first on such a stage.Payne has laid a wreath at her local Remembrance Day ceremony as a Silver Cross Mother every year since 2006, when her son was killed in Afghanistan. While Payne typically attends her local ceremony in Lansdowne, Ont., her husband David Payne — who served 30 years in the Canadian Armed Forces infantry — attends the larger ceremony 15 minutes down the road in Gananoque.“We spread ourselves around so we’re not both at the same one, so we’re out and about in the community,” Nancy said.
