‘I did apologize to the President,’ Carney says on U.S. anti-tariff ad – National

Prime Minister Mark Carney says he apologized to United States President Donald Trump after an Ontario anti-tariff ad aired in the U.S. last week. Carney made the comments Saturday from South Korea at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit when asked by reporters whether an apology was made.“I did apologize to the president. The president was offended by the ad, and it’s not something I would have done, which is to put in place that advertisement, and so I apologized to him,” Carney said.“I’m the one who is responsible, in my role as prime minister for the relationship with the President of the United States, and the federal government is responsible for the foreign relationship with the U.S. government. So, things happen. We take the good with the bad, and I apologized to him.” ...

Every agriculture worker with chronic kidney disease has it due to unknown cause

One in every 20 agricultural workers in Tamil Nadu could be having chronic kidney disease (CKD), with every other affected individual possibly having CKDu (chronic kidney disease with an unknown cause) -- a type known to affect mainly agricultural workers, a study published in The Lancet Regional Health Southeast Asia journal has estimated. The study points to factors associated with chronic kidney disease, including an increased age, diabetes, hypertension, anaemia and duration in a week spent working outdoors. Researchers, including those from Madras Medical College, said CKDu -- linked to heat stress due to working outdoors and exposure to agricultural chemicals and environmental toxins -- has been reported in "hotspots" around the world, including India, Sri Lanka and Central America...

How Apple Plans to Improve AI Image Editors

Apple might be dead last in the AI race—at least when you consider competition from companies like OpenAI, Google, and Meta—but that doesn't mean the company isn't working on the tech. In fact, it seems most of the work Apple does on AI is behind the scenes: While Apple Intelligence is, well, there, the company's researchers are working on other ways to improve AI models for everyone, not just Apple users. The latest project? Improving AI image editors based on text prompts. In a paper published last week, researchers introduced Pico-Banana-400K, a dataset of 400,000 "text-guided" images selected to improve AI-based image editing. Apple believes its image dataset improves upon existing sets by including higher quality images with more diversity: The researchers found that existing datasets...

Scientists detect new Covid-like virus from moustached bats in Brazil

An international team of scientists from Japan, the US, Australia, and Belgium has detected a new Covid-19-like virus from a species of moustached bats in Brazil, stoking fears of a potential spillover and a new disease.  Bats are natural reservoirs for many viruses, including betacoronaviruses -- which include the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome virus (MERS-CoV). The team from the universities of Osaka and Sydney detected the virus called BRZ batCoV from the Pteronotus parnellii -- a small insect-eating bat known for tiny hair tufts on its face. Even though the bat species is common in South America, experts fear the virus might have been gaining ground for months. “We identified a full-length genome of a novel bat CoV (BRZ b...

Kim Kardashian invited to NASA launch after moon landing conspiracy claims – National

The U.S. space agency NASA is rejecting conspiracy claims by Kim Kardashian that the 1969 Apollo 11 moon landings did not happen. In the most recent episode of her family’s hit reality show, The Kardashians, Kardashian says she thinks the pivotal lunar expedition was a hoax, citing a series of articles that, she claims, explain why some aspects of the footage and photographs taken on the moon are unreliable.Shortly after the episode aired, NASA acting administrator Sean Duffy rebuked Kardashian, writing to her in a post on X, “Yes, we’ve been to the Moon before… 6 times!”Yes, @KimKardashian, we’ve been to the Moon before… 6 times! And even better: @NASAArtemis is going back under the leadership of @POTUS.We won the last space race and we will win this one too 🇺🇸🚀🎥: Hulu pic.twitter.com/Ckex...

Trump says Carney ‘apologized’ for TV ad that scuttled U.S. trade talks – National

U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that Prime Minister Mark Carney “apologized” for the Ontario government’s anti-tariff TV ad that scuttled Canada-U.S. trade talks when the two leaders met in Asia this week. Asked aboard Air Force One on his way back to the U.S. from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meetings in Malaysia and South Korea if negotiations will resume, Trump said “no” before praising Carney.“I have a very good relationship. What to know about Cowichan land title case in B.C. and push for ‘clarity’

A landmark court ruling in British Columbia regarding Aboriginal land title over urban lands has ignited fierce debate and uncertainty over the future of private property rights in the province and across the country. The federal and provincial governments are appealing the B.C. Supreme Court’s ruling in favour of the Quw’utsun Nation, or Cowichan Nation, that found it had “established Aboriginal title” to more than 5.7 square kilometres of land on the Fraser River in Richmond, south of Vancouver. The City of Richmond has also joined the appeal. The ruling declared Crown and city titles on the land are “defective and invalid,” and the granting of private titles on it by the government unjustifiably infringed on the Cowichan title. That has created confusion and anger among homeowners in the a...
