Canada leaving ‘no stone unturned’ to defend Arctic alongside NATO: Anand – National

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said Monday the federal government is leaving “no stone unturned” to defend Canada’s North as changes in the global order in recent years are having direct implications for Canada’s Arctic sovereignty. Anand was in Helsinki to meet with her counterparts from Nordic countries to discuss Arctic security, which she said has become a more critical issue since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Before that, Anand said NATO countries typically focused on shoring up the security along the eastern flank in Europe.“NATO’s gaze also has to shift westward and north because of the changing geopolitical landscape, especially following February 24, 2022,” she said in a call back from Finland with reporters.“We are seeing increased activity, for...

Covid can accelerate ageing in blood vessels by five years in women: Study

A Covid-19 infection can accelerate ageing in blood vessels around five years, particularly in women, according to research.  As blood vessels ages, it can make arteries stiffer -- raising the risk of cardiovascular disease, including stroke and heart attack, explained the researchers. "We know that Covid can directly affect blood vessels. We believe that this may result in what we call early vascular ageing, meaning that your blood vessels are older than your chronological age and you are more susceptible to heart disease,” said Professor Rosa Maria Bruno from Université Paris Cité, France. “If that is happening, we need to identify who is at risk at an early stage to prevent heart attacks and strokes," Bruno said. The study, published in the European Heart Journal, included 2,390 peo...

I ‘De-Amazoned’ My Kindle, and Here’s How I Buy DRM-Free EBooks

Recently, I made the choice to buy a Kindle Paperwhite, but not register it to my Amazon account. Doing so is as simple as avoiding connecting to a wifi network during setup. The Kindle itself will still run just fine; it just won't connect to the internet or link itself to your Amazon account. I made this choice on purpose, because I am tired of being locked into Amazon's ecosystem to purchase books. Luckily, whether you register your Kindle or not, there are alternatives.Usually, the ebooks you buy for your Kindle have DRM (Digital Rights Management) included, which forbids you from legally copying the book to other devices. Big ebook publishers and retailers often use DRM to ensure that you can't make backups of ebooks you've already paid for. When you have a DRM-free ebook, though, you...

Researchers explain how loss of smell is associated with Alzheimer`s disease

Brain’s immune cells may explain why a fading sense of smell is an early signal for Alzheimer`s disease even before cognitive impairments manifest, according to a study. Researchers at DZNE and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) in Germany revealed that the brain`s immune response seems to fatally attack neuronal fibres crucial for the perception of odours. These olfactory dysfunctions arise because immune cells of the brain called "microglia" remove connections between two brain regions, namely the olfactory bulb and the locus coeruleus, they noted in the paper published in the journal Nature Communications. These findings, based on observations in mice and humans, including analysis of brain tissue and so-called PET scanning, may help to devise ways for early diagnosis and, ...

Peloton’s Guided Walk Workouts Are Great, Even If You Don’t Own a Treadmill

I never used to consider myself a "walking" kind of girl. I skipped the "hot girl walk" trends on social media and never took "mental health walks" during the pandemic lockdown. In fact, I long thought walking—one of the first milestones we reach as babies—had received a little too much PR hype, especially after learning that the much-ballyhooed "10,000 steps" we're supposed to take every day is an arbitrary figure invented to market pedometers. If I am going to do cardio, I reasoned, I'm going to do cardio: cycling, running, swimming, or playing sports. If I'm not sweating, what's the use? But after trying out Peloton's guided walks, available in the at-home fitness giant's incredibly versatile app, I have discovered the utility of the "very slow run." I am now, finally, a walking girl. I...

Experts highlight factors driving surge in heart-related deaths in young adults

A poor lifestyle with lack of sleep, binge drinking, and high stress, coupled with genes, is playing a significant role in the rising heart-related deaths in India, said experts on Saturday. Recently, an increasing number of heart-related deaths have been reported in the country. These have also been among people who are seemingly fit and are maintaining a healthy lifestyle. “Not all can be called heart attacks. About 20 per cent of the heart-related deaths in India are because of certain genes,” said Dr Rajiv Bhal, Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). He also blamed “binge drinking (alcohol) among the younger generation, silent hypertension, increasing stress, and a lack of proper sleep, as well as childhood obesity” for the surge in heart-related deaths. ...

Byelection day in Alberta nears for vote with 214 candidates, including Poilievre

Federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and 213 others vying for a seat in the House of Commons will be in the spotlight Monday, as voters in a rural Alberta riding head to the polls. Two political science professors say Poilievre is expected to handily win the byelection in Battle River-Crowfoot, a sprawling eastern Alberta riding stretching from Edmonton to Calgary. The riding and its previous incarnations have been a Tory stronghold for a century. They say the only question is: by how much?“In every election from 2004 to 2025, the vote share garnered by the Conservatives’ winning candidate has been at least 80 per cent,” said Julie Simmons with the University of Guelph in Ontario. The one exception was in 2021, when Conservative incumbent Damien Kurek got 71 per cent of the vote, lar...

YouTube Music Finally Added a Long-Missing Google Podcasts Feature

There are a lot of podcast apps out there, but the easiest one to use is the one that comes built into your phone. For Android users, that was Google Podcasts—that is, until last year, when Google killed off its flagship podcast app. Again, you have your choice among alternatives, but if you go with Google's choice, you might've found your way to YouTube Music. Like Spotify, Google's music app offers podcast support—though it's a bit more limited. If you're used to the polish and feature set of a dedicated podcast app (or, frankly, even Spotify), YouTube Music might be a tough adjustment. There are signs that things are changing, however. Google hasn't totally abandoned progress for the podcast side of YouTube Music. In fact, it's bringing a feature that was lost in the transition from Goo...
