Study finds hidden genetic risk delaying diabetes diagnosis in men

A common gene variant may be delaying diagnoses of type 2 diabetes in millions of men worldwide, and increasing their risk of serious complications, according to a study.  G6PD deficiency is a genetic condition that affects more than 400 million people worldwide, and is especially prevalent among those with African, Asian, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean backgrounds. It is more common in men and usually goes undetected because it rarely causes symptoms. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends routine screening for G6PD deficiency in populations where it is common, but it is not widely implemented in many other countries. Researchers from the University of Exeter, in collaboration with Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), found that men with G6PD deficiency are, on average, d...

Do You Wanna Partner: Nishant Nayak on casting Tamannaah Bhatia and Diana Penty

After dabbling in non-fiction all his career, creator Nishant Nayak harboured a dream of making a fiction show. He says it took him and his team almost five years to bring the show to screen. The Amazon Prime Video series Do You Wanna Partner, starring Diana Penty, Tamannaah Bhatia, Jaaved Jaaferi, Nakuul Mehta, and Shweta Tiwari, among others, was, he shares, a product of the pandemic. In conversation with mid-day, Nayak discusses how he and Mithun Gangopadhyay developed the idea, did intense research of the beer industry, and how much the script changed from start to finish. Excerpts from the interview. What made you move from non-fiction to fiction? To be honest, I haven’t moved. It was just something that I wanted to try out. I still work as a non-fiction director. Actually, I wrote t...

99 pc patients had at least one major risk factor before first heart attack

Heart attack, stroke, or heart failure come with warning signs in 99 per cent cases, according to a large study that refuted the notion that these devastating events often strike people without warning signs.  The study led by Northwestern Medicine, US, and Yonsei University in South Korea, showed people with these deadly cardiovascular diseases -- which remain the leading cause of death worldwide -- had at least one risk factor above an optimal level beforehand. "We think the study shows very convincingly that exposure to one or more nonoptimal risk factors before these cardiovascular outcomes is nearly 100 per cent," said senior author Dr. Philip Greenland, professor of cardiology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. "The goal now is to work harder on finding ways t...

Fact File: Trump post on Blue Jays is a fake

The Toronto Blue Jays clinched their first American League East Division title since 2015 with a win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, but a screenshot shared online of a supposed Truth Social post from Donald Trump suggested the U.S. president wasn’t on board with the Jays’ playoff run. The post, written in all-capital letters, says the United States will be investigating the “un-American” Blue Jays as they attempt to “steal” the World Series, and that the team would not be invited to the White House. In fact, the post is a satirical fake, the White House confirmed to The Canadian Press, and does not appear on Trump’s social media feed.THE CLAIM“WE WILL BE INVESTIGATING THE UN AMERICAN BLUE JAYS WHO ARE ATTEMPTING TO STEAL OUR BELOVED WORLD SERIES,” reads a screenshot of what appears to b...

Government of Alberta plans to propose a new oil pipeline to B.C. coast

Premier Danielle Smith says Alberta is committing $14 million to a West Coast oil pipeline do-over that hinges on First Nations getting on board early and Ottawa reversing a tanker ban that would make such a project unworkable on the northern B.C. coast. It’s a project Smith hails as the fulfilment of a higher duty to humanity, while her B.C. counterpart characterizes it as half-baked political gamesmanship.“What stands before us right now is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to unlock our wealth and resources and become a world-leading energy superpower,” Smith told a news conference in Calgary on Wednesday.“There are billions of people around the world living in energy poverty who demand a higher standard of living. This is not just a question of Alberta’s energy. It is a global, moral ...

‘Not a real project,’ B.C. premier says of Alberta’s plan for oil pipeline to the coast

Descrease article font size Increase article font size The Alberta government said Wednesday it plans to apply to build a new oil pipeline to northwestern British Columbia. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says her government will submit the application to the federal government next spring.Alberta will act as the proponent, Smith explained, with the support and technical advice from three crude pipeline companies: Enbridge, South Bow and Trans Mountain.B.C. Premier David Eby has long opposed the project.“The problem that we have is Smith continues to advance a project that is taxpayer-funded, has no private sector proponent, is not a real project and is incredibly alarming to British Columbians, especially First Nations along the coast,” Eby sa...

OpenAI Just Made an App for Sharing Hyper-Realistic AI Slop

Did you know you can customize Google to filter out garbage? Take these steps for better search results, including adding my work at Lifehacker as a preferred source.Last year, I wrote that we should all be scared of Sora, OpenAI's AI video generator. Sora's initial rollout promised hyper-realistic videos that, while exciting to some, terrified me. While AI fans see a future of AI-generated movies and shows, I see a future where no one can tell what's real or fake. To me, the only destination for this technology is mass disinformation. In the year and a half since, these AI-generated videos haven't only become more realistic; they've also become more accessible, as companies like Google make their tools readily available to anyone willing to pay. That's the situation we find ourselves in wi...

Conservatives want to know if Liberal ‘lied’ about Kneecap entry ban – National

Federal Conservatives say they want the Liberal government to clearly explain whether the controversial Irish hip-hop group Kneecap is barred from entering Canada or not as questions swirl about the case. Liberal MP Vince Gasparro, the parliamentary secretary for combating crime, announced nearly two weeks ago “on behalf of the Government of Canada” that the band’s members had been deemed ineligible for entry ahead of scheduled concerts this month.Yet the group says it has still not received official notice about being barred or any rejection of their electronic travel authorizations, which Irish citizens require in order to enter Canada and which the group says they obtained.Gasparro and other cabinet officials have refused to provide clarity in the days since the announcement.“He either ...

Canada Post’s future needs emergency debate by MPs amid strike, NDP urges – National

The NDP on Wednesday called for an emergency debate in the House of Commons on the future of Canada Post as the government seeks changes to the company’s business that have sparked a national postal workers’ strike. NDP interim Leader Don Davies said he sent a letter to the Speaker of the House requesting the emergency debate for Wednesday night, citing “the urgent situation” facing the Crown corporation.“We all know that delivering the mail today in 2025 is different than it was decades ago. We know there are economic challenges facing Canada Post. However, the question is how best to deal with it,” Davies told reporters ahead of question period.“That’s why we think an institution as vital to our country as Canada Post is, as historically relevant and as integral it is to our economy, we ...
