Best day trips by train from London to see historic wonders

Verulamium, now known as St Albans, was the third largest city of Roman Britain. Here are some of the most incredible Roman ruins in the UK, all in the shadow of St Albans Cathedral, the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in Britain. There’s so much history here: a Norman tower, the longest nave in England, medieval wall paintings, the Shrines of Alban and Amphibalus, and the Abbot’s Kitchen (a café). All just 30 mins on the train from London. Source link

art’otel Hoxton hotel review: Cool Britannia in building form

A café slash brasserie mix, it does an excellent a la carte breakfast, and (when the sun goes down) boasts a very Continental-inspired menu. Take a seat here and work your way through a burrata, tomato and basil oil starter, a truly enormous serving of moules frites and finish with a monkfish chop, fresh from the grill (a meal for two costs around £100). It’s comfort food done well, but still — if Joia at art’otel Battersea is anything to go by, we’re in for a treat when the signature restaurant opens. Source link

Wild swimming: where to cool off within an hour of London

Ridiculously beautiful meadow with river beach where you can swim across the Thames. On the opposite bank lies the equally beautiful, but less frequented, Dumsey Meadow, a Site of Special Scientific Interest. You can get to Dumsey Meadow by swimming across the Thames or walking via Chertsey Bridge. There are plenty of entry and exit points on the Dumsey side by the sloping bank into the water, which is clean and fresh. An information board informed us that feathered visitors to the meadow include herons, kingfishers and great crested grebes – right on cue, a heron landed gracefully on the water nearby. Grab yourself some food and drink in the Kingfisher public house, Chertsey Bridge Road. Directions: Waterloo to Chertsey (45 mins) +c2-mile cycle (10 mins). Close to National Cycle Route 4...

The coke mob: People are bringing Class A drugs to the far right riots

So why bring cocaine to a “protest”? “If people are going to an event where they are expecting trouble, violence, or they're expecting there to be a high level of socialisation with their in-group, then cocaine is good for that,” says Sumnall. “It's good for providing energy, focus, concentration, and reduces fatigue. So if you wanted to be alert at a public event like this, where you might be expecting aggression and confrontation, cocaine is the drug to do that.” Source link

The best celebrity beauty brands and the forgotten ones: from KKW to JLo Beauty

In the 1400s, God sent clouds of locusts, swarms of frogs and a litany of lice to punish humans in what are now known at The Plagues of Egypt. In the 21st century, we’ve had had some plagues of our own. First was the celebrity fragrance. You may recall Beyoncé’s Heat, Sarah Jessica Parker’s Lovely, Britney Spears’ Fantasy — or one of their twenty individual variants, forming an inescapable fume of sweetness that clouded each and every Boots and Superdrug. Then came the apps. “The Jeremy Renner app is a must have”, said Jeremy Renner, probably. Then the subscription services — mini Goop imitations that allowed you to sign up for updates on Khloe Kardashian’s inner life and burgeoning hatred of gluten. Now, it’s the celebrity beauty brands. They’re everywhere. They’re almighty. It feels as t...

Tinos, a sleepy gem of a Greek island

Though you probably won’t want to leave the hotel, Tinos, while somewhat barren in terms of greenery to those of us from a more rain-lashed isle, is a delight to explore. Best known by pilgrims for the Church of Panagia Evangeslistria, also called the “Greek Lourdes” for its perceived healing powers, the ancient hills are covered in the most intricate dovecotes or pigeon houses that were built during the Venetian period of 1207-1715. Unique to the island, they give the area an incredibly distinctive appearance, as do the windmills, some also dating back centuries, that dot the horizon. Source link
