Ultimate summer shoe guide: the sandals, sliders (and jelly shoes) to know

Now here’s a plot-twist we didn’t see coming: Salcombe yachting favourite, Hurlingham staple, King’s Road trotter, yes the boat or deck shoe has made a curious emergence from the Home Counties, courtesy of Miu Miu. Those now cult options have long sold out, but there are plenty of others around to pick up. I like the idea of them with a white mid-ankle sock, lean into that preppy mood! Irony, essential. See Jones Bookmaker for a white take with contrasting laces, while Timberland has a chunky, flatform take which feels spot on. Source link

Caleb Azumah Nelson: ‘I got stop and searched the week my hit novel came out’

After studying English at Coventry University, Nelson found himself back in south-east London, “floating”, as he describes it. Working part-time jobs, he spent whatever free time he could find in the space between, diligently writing. Two years were spent trying and failing to find an agent. “It was either silence, or like, ‘I love your work, but there’s no place for it in the market’,” he says. His now agent, however, responded within 20 minutes, suggesting he work the essays he had pitched into a novel, which became Open Water. Source link

The Beckley Retreat – a trip of a lifetime?

When I ask Neil Markey, a former US army vet who served in Iraq and Afghanistan and now heads up the retreats branch of Beckley, what kind of people I should expect to meet on my retreat, his answer is remarkably simple: seekers. Only when I arrive, they are anything but the dreadlocked, flip-flopped stereotype I have in mind. Some are academics and psychotherapists, who want to integrate psilocybin trips into their own practice, but there are also classical music prodigies, novelists, painters. That the group isn’t hugely diverse isn’t a surprise: the retreats are costly and there is still an element of social taboo around group therapy in certain cultures. Source link

Can this £3,000 bed help me sleep like a billionaire?

Ironic, yes, but the Pod is not to be sniffed at. It counts some of the world’s top athletes (Formula 1’s Lewis Hamilton and George Russell), tech overlords like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg and biohackers like Tim Ferris among its users. Now in its fourth iteration (Pod4 – yours for £2,649), it far outranks earlier sleep-tracking devices like Fitbits or Garmin watches. It is a smart mattress cover, connected to a mobile app, which tracks heart rate variability to determine the quality, routine and duration of one’s sleep, and gives an overall “sleep fitness” score out of 100 every night. It is also connected to a box on the side of the bed, called the Hub, which acts as a control centre. More advanced Eight Sleep products will also be able to block out light and sound, creating a space a...

Meta Quest 3 VR workout review: Is the Meta Quest 3 as effective as Barry’s Bootcamp?

Best for: Joining the mind-blowing metaverse No, not a PS5 and now an Xbox Series X, but rather the very latest entry point into the world of VR gaming, the Meta Quest 3; and what an entry point it is too as having been hands-on and head-in with the device, I can quite honestly and emphatically say that I’m a complete and utter convert.Currently costing about the same as the console twins, what you get in the box is the headset with the standard pre-installed facial interface, 2x Touch Plus controllers and power gubbins, so all quite simple and straightforward. Then you download the Meta Quest app on your phone, install some apps, slip on the headset and slip seamlessly into the virtual world.Using mixed reality, you can let the Quest 3 measure and map the movable space within the room or ...

Magdalena Plaza Seville review: a beautiful stay in one of Europe’s most captivating cities

Home to bullfighting, flamenco, colourful festivals, and the world’s biggest Gothic cathedral, Seville should be on everyone’s bucket list. Sometimes overlooked for larger cities such as Madrid and Barcelona, Seville may be smaller, but there’s a reason it’s known as the Pearl of Andalusia. Originally the economic centre of the Spanish empire, the fourth-largest city in the country has evolved into a cultural and historical hub, boasting three World Heritage Sites and even claiming to be the birthplace of tapas.Cool and contemporary, the Magdalena Plaza Seville is perfectly positioned in the old town of this vibrant city. The hotel, which runs entirely on renewable energy, may be newer to a city so rich in history, but it is well worth your time. The hotel is located in the city’s Alfalfa ...
