Crunching the numbers: How does a grocery shop compare to 2022?

Photo: 123RF What happens when the price at the supermarket checkout keeps rising but your budget does not? In our latest installment of Checkpoint's new series Crunching the Numbers, we are drilling into the detail of the weekly shop from Countdown and PAK'n SAVE to see how much it has gone up since 2022. It is no secret Kiwis are feeling the pinch, so RNZ asked shoppers how much the weekly shop was setting them back. One woman said for a household of four it cost them $200. Another shopper said for their household of four with three teenagers it cost $500. A single pensioner said he usually paid $100 a week. For over two years, Checkpoint has been tracking the price of 36 supermarket items in the same area. Our first shop in May 2022 at Greenlane Countdown cost us $238 dollars and th...

The prime minister said the government had not received any reports of major damage. Photo: 123RF A magnitude-5.3 earthquake hit Tokyo and eastern parts of Japan on Friday evening (local time), the government said, a day after it issued the first-ever advisory about the risk of a huge earthquake in the west of the country. Although damage to the areas closest to the epicentre was not immediately clear, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said the government had not received any reports of major damage, speaking at his Tokyo office shortly after the quake. The quake's epicentre was in the Kanagawa prefecture south next to the capital, at a depth of 10km, Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said. Kanagawa does not lie within the western zone along the Pacific coast known as the Nankai Trough, whic...

Things are getting better – it just might not feel like it yet: Kiwibank

There's a brighter future for many as the economic clouds over New Zealand are starting to lift, Kiwibank's latest report says. Photo: Pablo Heimplatz / Unsplash Most of the country is starting to recover economically, even if it doesn't feel like it, Kiwibank says. It has released its latest annual regional report, which it described as "tentatively optimistic" about what lies ahead for the country's economy. Every region increased its economic score compared to last year - with the exception of Wellington - although the highest score remains only five out of 10, recorded in Southland. "We're not shooting the lights out by any stretch of the imagination," said Kiwibank chief economist Jarrod Kerr. "What we're really feeling is that things are slightly better than last year but still at...

BBC asks news anchor Huw Edwards to return salary paid since sex offence arrest

By Paul Sandle, Reuters Huw Edwards pleaded guilty in July to making indecent pictures of children. Photo: JUSTIN TALLIS/AFP Britain's BBC says Huw Edwards, its former news anchor who pleaded guilty in July to making indecent pictures of children, should return the salary he was paid after his arrest in November, adding he had not been up front about the charges. Edwards was the BBC's highest paid journalist and top news presenter until he quit in April, receiving an yearly salary of up to £479,999 (NZ$1.02 million), according to its annual report. He had not been on screen since last July following allegations he had paid a young person for sexually explicit photos, something which was unconnected to the criminal charges. The board of the BBC, which is funded by a fee paid by televi...

Who said boys don’t cry?

Does my character die?’ That was Abhishek Banerjee’s first question when Rana Naidu came his way. You can’t blame him for being skeptical. “In all the OTT shows I had done until then, my character always ended up dying. So, when I first heard the story from Karan Anshuman [creator-director], my first question was whether I would die in it,” laughs the actor, who shot to fame with Paatal Lok (2020). Luckily, Jaffa, his character in Rana Naidu, is an exception. The actor is set to reprise his role in the second season of the Netflix drama, led by Rana Daggubati and Venkatesh. While Daggubati plays a man who makes a living by fixing celebrities’ problems, Banerjee essays his younger brother. In the opening season, directors Anshuman and Suparn Varma explored child sexual abuse through his ...

Mediterranean diet may help lower stress, finds study

If you are under high stress, following a Mediterranean diet -- rich in fruits and veggies, nuts and legumes -- may help, according to a research. The research by a team from Binghamton University, State University of New York compared the Mediterranean diet versus the traditional Western diet to understand how diet influences stress. Stress can be a precursor to mental distress, said Lina Begdache, Associate Professor of health and wellness studies, adding that the findings show people can lower their perception of how much stress they can tolerate by following a Mediterranean diet. Begdache said the study, published in Nutrition and Health, "demonstrated that the Mediterranean diet lowers mental distress". It "may be associated with a decrease in the negative components of perceived ...

The coke mob: People are bringing Class A drugs to the far right riots

So why bring cocaine to a “protest”? “If people are going to an event where they are expecting trouble, violence, or they're expecting there to be a high level of socialisation with their in-group, then cocaine is good for that,” says Sumnall. “It's good for providing energy, focus, concentration, and reduces fatigue. So if you wanted to be alert at a public event like this, where you might be expecting aggression and confrontation, cocaine is the drug to do that.” Source link
