Ukraine says it has destroyed another bridge in Russia’s Kursk region

Volodymyr Zelensky. Photo: AFP / Petras Malukas Ukrainian air forces have destroyed another strategic bridge over the Seym River in Russia's Kursk region, limiting the supply capacity of a Russian group opposing the Ukrainian advance, Ukraine's commander said on Sunday. Kyiv said it had seized more than 80 settlements over 1150 square kilometres in Kursk since launching a surprise strike across the border on 6 August, the biggest invasion of Russia since World War II. "Kursk direction. Minus one more bridge! Ukrainian Air Force aviation continues to deprive the enemy of logistical capabilities with precision airstrikes, which significantly affects the course of hostilities," Mykola Oleshchuk said on the Telegram messaging app. He posted a video showing a growing cloud from an explosion ...

Details of ComCom probe of retail banking sector awaited

Photo: RNZ The Commerce Commission is set to reveal its eagerly awaited final report into competition in the retail banking sector on Tuesday. Its draft report found the sector lacks competition, with a two-tier market dominated by the big four Australian-owned banks, ANZ, ASB, BNZ and Westpac. The report suggested that the sector lacked disruptive forces to drive change and deliver benefits. It stopped short of calling for a break-up of the big banks, and there was little indication a drastic measure might emerge in the final report. The draft report also recommended the government look at ways to beef up [https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/business/524216/how-a-kiwibank-sale-might-work Kiwibank] by increasing its capital. When it came to competition for home loans (retail banks' biggest busine...

Economy: Light at the end of the tunnel as inflation and interest rates ease

Photo: RNZ / Rebekah Parsons-King There is light at the end of the tunnel for the economy, as inflation and interest rates continue to ease. ASB's latest quarterly forecast indicates economic growth will be flat or down for the rest of this year, while global growth also remained below average. GDP, which had contracted in two of the past six quarters through to March 2024, was also down 0.5 percent from its 2022 peak, and more than 4 percent down on a per-capita basis. ASB chief economist Nick Tuffley said the economy had been showing "increasing signs of brittleness under the continued pressure from high interest rates", but there were brighter days ahead. "Painful as it is, inflation is getting under control," he said. "Recent encouraging signs suggest the Reserve Bank can be confiden...

TikTokers are speeding up songs – but are we forgetting the originals?

By Christian Brooks, BBC Sabrina Carpenter performs at the Coachella Stage, 2024. Photo: FRAZER HARRISON Some music fans now know 15-second sped-up snippets of songs better than the real thing. It is thanks to an emerging trend on social media, particularly TikTok, of creators changing the tempo of popular songs by 25-30 percent, to accompany short viral videos of dances or other themes. These versions are even helping some artists climb the official singles charts. In November 2022, fan-made sped-up versions of RAYE's single 'Escapism' helped the artist to achieve her first ever number one on the UK Official Singles Chart, nearly three months after its original release. An initial trend developed based around the lyric: "The man that I loved sat me down last night and he told me it ...

"We've called out Vulcan, Warehouse, Sky TV, Air New Zealand that we think potentially will p...

Doctors save 72-year-old man with non-healing ulcers from leg amputation

A 72-year-old man’s 15-year struggle with non-healing ulcers on his right leg, caused by neglected varicose veins, was brought to an end by a successful medical intervention by doctors.   The patient Abdul Mabood, a mill worker, faced the risk of leg amputation due to the severity of his condition. He had suffered from non-healing ulcers with dilated veins and skin discoloration, which worsened over the years. Despite seeking treatment at multiple hospitals, he was advised to undergo an above-knee leg amputation. However, doctors at Apollo Spectra Hospitals, Kanpur, saved his leg and restored his quality of life using a minimally-invasive procedure. The team performed an endovenous laser ablation with a foam sclerotherapy procedure, which involved puncturing the vein, using a laser fi...

Cost of workplace accidents rises to $4.4b a year – report

Photo: RNZ / Angus Dreaver The cost of workplace accidents rose to $4.9 billion in 2023, up from $4.4b the year before, a new report shows. The State of a Thriving Nation report was released by the Business Leaders' Health and Safety Forum on Monday. Written by economist Shamubeel Eaqub, the report tallied the cost of lost lives and earnings, serious injury costs to ACC, and health issues to reach the $4.9b figure. "Catching up to Australia's performance would save New Zealand $1.4 billion each year, and if we were to match the UK's performance, we would save $3.4 billion per year," the forum's chief executive Francois Barton said. The report also found that close to 50 percent of New Zealanders had been affected by a workplace accident involving either themselves, a colleague, their fam...

Gaza: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrives in Israel for ceasefire talks

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrives in Tel Aviv to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders in a renewed bid for a ceasefire and hostage-release deal in Gaza. Photo: AFP / Pool US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has arrived in Israel in his latest effort to push for a ceasefire and hostage-release deal in Gaza. His ninth trip to the region since the war began in October comes days after the US presented a modified proposal aimed at bridging long-standing gaps between the two sides. The US and Israel have expressed optimism about a deal since talks resumed in Doha last week, but Hamas says suggestions of progress are an "illusion". Differences are said to include whether Israeli troops will be required to withdraw fully from the Gaza Strip, as H...
