Port Taranaki job losses could follow Methanex’s decision to cut production

Port Taranaki is in talks with its staff following the announcement from Methanex. Photo: Supplied / Port Taranaki The announcement of 70 potential job losses at Methanex's plant in Taranaki is sending shock waves through the region, with Port Taranaki already in talks with its staff about reconfiguring its business. Methanex, which uses gas to produce methanol for export, said policy settings had not been conducive to securing sustainable gas supply for its business since 2018. About 300 people work at Methanex's Motunui plant, but when a deal to sell its gas supply to electricity generators Genesis and Contact Energy ends later this year that number could take a hit. The Canadian-based multinational has told staff that rather than firing up two production plants it wanted to scale bac...

Australia threatens fines for social media giants enabling misinformation

By Byron Kaye for Reuters Apps for social media services including Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, Threads, Telegram and others. Photo: Victor Okhrimets / 123RF Australia said it will fine internet platforms up to 5 percent of their global revenue for failing to prevent the spread of misinformation online, joining a worldwide push to rein in borderless tech giants but angering free speech advocates. The government said it would make tech platforms set codes of conduct governing how they stop dangerous falsehoods spreading, to be approved by a regulator. The regulator would set its own standard if a platform failed to do so, then fine companies for non-compliance. The legislation, to be introduced in parliament on Thursday, targets false content that hurts election integrit...

Crunching the numbers: People picking up second jobs to make ends meet

Many are needing to turn to second jobs to pay the bills. Photo: 123RF From police officers to IT workers, people are picking up second jobs to make ends meet. As part of Checkpoint's series Crunching the Numbers, we're drilling into the detail of people's finances and this week, we've spoken to people with full-time jobs who are burning out because they're having to find side hustles to stay financially afloat. Avinash Kaur Dhaliwal works for an IT company in Auckland and on top of her full-time job, she became a marriage celebrant to help pay for extra expenses. She said the money from her second job goes towards everyday needs like groceries, petrol and public transport costs, as half price fares have now ended in Auckland. "Nowadays we've reduced our expenses so much, before we us...

Taylor Swift and Post Malone win biggest award of VMAs 2024 and other key moments

Photo: Michael Loccisano / Getty Images for MTV / AFP It was déjà vu when Eminem opened the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) with a bunch of look-alikes in blonde wigs, Eminem wearing one too before switching to a baseball cap. It was a call back to his performance at the 2000 VMAs when he walked in with scores of "Slim Shady" characters dressed like him. It wasn't the only throwback with host Megan Thee Stallion dressing up like Britney Spears during her 2001 VMA performance of 'Slave 4 U' during which she carried a live snake. It didn't take long for Megan Thee Stallion to discard her reptile friend. VMA iconic moments that shaped the earl...

Inflation pressures show signs of easing, consumers still reluctant to spend

Photo: 123RF Inflation pressures are showing more signs of easing, but consumers still look reluctant to spend to any extent. A slew of Stats NZ data showed food prices rose 0.2 percent in August on July, but the annual rate eased to 0.4 percent. Higher prices for eating out, takeaways, and groceries were the main drivers behind the annual gain of 3.6 percent, while fruit and vegetable prices fell 12.2 percent . Among groceries olive oil, butter and chocolate were notable price rises. "The average price of a 250g block of chocolate has increased 20 percent since this time last year," consumer prices manager James Mitchell said. World olive oil supplies and prices have been affected by bad weather in Europe, while chocolate prices have surged on the back of disease, drought, and reduced s...

Parts of Hanoi remain flooded as landslides hit northern Vietnam

People wade through flood waters on a boat in Hanoi on September 12, 2024, as heavy rains in the aftermath of Typhoon Yagi brought flooding to northern Vietnam. Photo: NHAC NGUYEN / AFP Several Hanoi districts remained inundated on Thursday with the weather agency forecasting little change in the water levels of the Red River over the next 24 hours, as floods and landslides continued to affect areas in northern Vietnam. Vietnam is still reeling from the impact of Typhoon Yagi, the strongest storm to hit Asia this year, which made landfall on Saturday. At least 197 people have been killed and 128 missing since the storm struck, according to the government's disaster management agency. Some 800 people have been injured. More young people die by suicide in India, say experts

More young people die by suicide in India than in other countries, said experts on World Suicide Prevention Day on Tuesday.  World Suicide Prevention Day is observed every year on September 10 to raise awareness and fight stigma. The theme this year is “Changing the narrative on suicide”. It has been estimated that suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among the late adolescent age groups (15–19 years) in India. According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), more than 40 per cent of all cases of suicides are among young adults below the age of 30. “In India, the magnitude of the young people dying by suicide is unfortunately very high. The number of young people who died by suicide in India is almost double in comparison to the global average. Approximately 160...

Photo: AFP / SAUL LOEB The US presidential debate between Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican candidate Donald Trump attracted 57.5 million television viewers across seven TV networks, according to preliminary Nielsen data on Wednesday. Tuesday night's event was the first time the candidates in the 5 November presidential election had met face to face. The viewing figure tops the roughly 51 million people who watched Trump debate then-candidate President Joe Biden in June. It does not capture the full extent of online viewing, which has grown in popularity as traditional TV audiences decline. Nor does it reflect viewers who watched the debate in bars and restaura...

Review: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice – ‘What was novel, creepy fun back in 1988 is a bit retro and cheesy in 2024’

Photo: Warner Bros. Review - Tim Burton's ghostly 1980s hit returns in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. But has the 36-year wait been worth it? Burton's audience was earned with a string of uniquely distinctive hits in the 80s and 90s - Gothic fables including Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Alice in Wonderland. But it's been a while since his last big-screen success, so now he's turned to a belated sequel to his first big hit - Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. He was like a solitary, genius kid playing with toys of his own creation, and endlessly devising spooky Halloween stories to go with them. And the most Tim Burton movie of all was the 1988 hyperactive ghost comedy Beetlejuice. It was funny, it was sweet-natured, it was endlessly inventive, even if by the end the film Bee...
