Count me out: Troubled census sets tone for PNG democracy

By Michael Kabuni A PNG enumerator collects census data on paper in one of Port Moresby’s largest suburbs, Gerehu on 28 June 2024. Photo: BenarNews / Harlyne Joku Opinion - More than three months behind schedule, millions in new high-tech equipment wasted, and many workers left unpaid, these are the statistical outcomes so far from Papua New Guinea's census. While this case study in PNG administrative failure continues to unfold, ministers are heading overseas to learn about implementing a new counting system to underpin the county's democracy. The 2024 census started late on 16 June, missed the count reporting deadline of 30 June, and in any case included only six questions, failing to meet the benchmark UN census standards, which emphasises reliable data. Without timely and accura...

Prolonged exposure to air pollution may be detrimental to brain

Even as air quality in the national capital continues to be in the `very poor` category, health experts on Thursday said that prolonged exposure to air pollution may be detrimental to the brain.  According to Central Pollution Control Board data (CPCB), the air quality index (AQI) was 336 at 7.30 a.m. Various monitoring stations across the national capital recorded the air quality in the `very poor` category -- between 301 and 400. During the day, the air quality is expected to drop to the `severe` category at places where the AQI is near 400, as per the CPCB. A recent study, published in The Lancet Planetary Health, showed short-term air pollution exposure claimed 33,000 lives annually in 10 cities in India, and Delhi topped the list with 12,000 deaths every year. Dr PN Renjen, senior...

Conflicting economic signals are causing confusion in the bond market

Bond market investors are having trouble figuring out an economy that looks good from 30,000 feet, but less so closer to the ground. Treasury yields have been surging over the past month or so, even with Thursday's decline , helping pull down stocks this week. While a variety of reasons have been cited, one of the most popular is the simple notion that the Federal Reserve is closer to achieving its much-touted soft landing in which it can use high interest rates to bring down inflation without wrecking the broader economy. Higher growth expectations generally translate into higher bond yields. Virtually all of the macroeconomic data lately has supported that thesis. Whether it's payrolls, gross domestic product or retail sales, or a host of other measures, growth looks solid, at the very l...
