Body pulled from mine after police cut off supplies to ‘smoke out’ thousands of illegal miners | World News

A body has been recovered from a South African mine after police cut off basic supplies in an effort to force around 4,000 illegal miners to resurface. The body has emerged from the closed gold mine in the northwest town of Stilfontein a day after South Africa's government said it would not help the illegal miners. Around 20 people have surfaced from the mineshaft this week as police wait nearby to arrest all those appearing from underground. It comes a day after a cabinet minister said the government was trying to "smoke them [the miners] out".The move is part of the police's "Close the Hole" operation, whereby officers cut off supplies of food, water and other basic necessities to get those who have entered illegally to come out. Local reports suggest the supply routes were cut off at the ...

Republicans retain House control, completing party’s sweep into power – National

Republicans have won enough seats to control the U.S. House, completing the party’s sweep into power and securing their hold on U.S. government alongside President-elect Donald Trump. A House Republican victory in Arizona, alongside a win in slow-counting California earlier Wednesday, gave the GOP the 218 House victories that make up the majority. Republicans earlier gained control of the Senate from Democrats. With hard-fought yet thin majorities, Republican leaders are envisioning a mandate to upend the federal government and swiftly implement Trump’s vision for the country. The incoming president has promised to carry out the country’s largest-ever deportation operation, extend tax breaks, punish his political enemies, seize control of the federal government’s most powerful tools and resh...

Did you know consuming weed can increase cancer risk?

Cannabis consumption can cause damage to our body`s cells and increase the risk of highly cancerous tumours, according to a new study on Thursday. In the study, published in the scientific journal Addiction Biology, cannabis is described as a “genotoxic” substance because it damages a cell`s genetic information. This can lead to DNA mutations, accelerated ageing, and cancer.  Alarmingly, this genotoxicity can be passed on to the next generation via a damaged egg and sperm -- making the risk of cannabis use trans-generational, said the researchers from the University of Western Australia. In the study, the team also linked established knowledge that cannabis use damages cellular energy production by inhibiting mitochondria with recent cancer research showing that mitochondrial dysfunctio...

Trump’s proposed tariffs unlikely to include Canadian oil: experts – National

President-elect Donald Trump’s promise to slap an across-the-board tariff of at least 10 per cent on all imports including from Canada is unlikely to apply to Canadian oil, energy experts are predicting. The threat of the tariff is causing a lot of concern north of the border, where the Canadian Chamber of Commerce said such a tariff could take a $30-billion bite out of the Canadian economy.Rory Johnston, a Toronto-based oil market researcher and founder of Commodity Context, said he believes there’s a very small probability that Trump’s fees would apply to Canadian oil, but it is “quite a potentially damaging one.”“Canada is uniquely vulnerable to market pressure posed by U.S. refineries given our lack of alternative egress,” Johnston said during a panel for the Canadian Global Affairs In...

A necklace believed to contain jewels from the infamous Marie Antoinette "Affair of the Diamond Necklace" has been sold for £3.7m.Set with nearly 500 diamonds and weighing about 300 carats, it smashed price expectations at a Sotheby's auction in Geneva. The Marchioness of Anglesey wore it at Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953, and it was also worn 16 years earlier at King George VI's crowning. However, the link to Marie Antoinette, the last queen of France, may have been the most intriguing selling point for the mystery buyer. Some of the jewels are believed to have been at the centre of the Affair of the Diamond Necklace - a scandal which is said to have paved the way for Antoinette's eventual downfall. The scandal erupted when a hard-up noblewoman, Jeanne de la Motte, pretended to be ...

Human Rights Watch accuses Israel of mass displacement in Gaza amounting to a war crime

By Mick Krever and Irene Nasser, CNN Displaced Palestinians are shown fleeing from Gaza City, arriving at the Nuseirat refugee camp amid ongoing battles between Israel and Hamas. Photo: MAJDI FATHI / AFP Israel has overseen the forced mass displacement of Palestinians in Gaza in a deliberate and systematic campaign that amounts to a war crime and a crime against humanity, according to a new Human Rights Watch report. The 154-page report, published by the US-based advocacy group this week, details more than 13 months of widespread destruction in Gaza that, according to the United Nations, has seen the displacement of about 1.9 million Palestinians - more than 90 percent of the territory's population.
