Adwoa Aboah’s guide to London: The Karaoke Hole and Speedboat Bar

London and Los Angeles. I live with my partner Daniel and my daughter Shy.

Where do you stay in London?

Hotel mum and dad! Sadly, there is no spa but an excellent hose in the garden. The food is free and exceptional, nothing beats my mum’s roasts, curries and pastas! The decor is mostly photos of myself — I love that.

Where was your first flat?

About 500 yards from my parents’ house in Notting Hill, but nowhere will ever be quite like home.

What was your first job in London?

I worked at a toy shop called Honey Jam followed by a shop called The Village Bicycle in west London. It sold clothes. I was always late but sold the most amount of clothes to boujie west London mums because I am a gifted shop assistant.

Where would you recommend for a first date?

Speedboat Bar in Soho, but only if you both like spicy food!

Dinings on Harcourt Street with Daniel. It was the most delicious Japanese food I have ever eaten. The Tar-Tar chips were exquisite, but the chocolate fondant is my favourite dessert in London.

What would you do if you were Mayor for the day?

A city-wide game of Sardines, followed up with a dance party at Buckingham Palace. It would be mass karaoke with numerous performers, and a mass art exhibition/workshop day. Also, absolutely no parking tickets are to be issued all day.

Who is the most iconic Londoner?

Skin from Skunk Anansie — and obviously Stormzy as well.

What’s the best thing a cabbie has ever said to you?

Always entertaining to hear a new conspiracy theory. The most recent one I have heard was about bigfoot and time portals.

Have you ever had a run-in with a London police officer?

As a teenager, I threw a party at a friend’s house while her parents were away — it ended up with the contents of her mum’s wardrobe being stolen, police being called and I had to call my parents. They were not happy.

Where do you let your hair down?

I’m a mutha now! But I do love some karaoke at The Karaoke Hole in east London. Kate Bush, Wuthering Heights being my go-to song.

Who do you call when you want to have fun?

I call my sister Kesewa or my best friends: Indie, Nancy and Felix. With them we never run out of things to say and it’s always constant lols.

What’s your biggest extravagance?

Shopping, congestion charge, heating bills and Coterie nappies.

What’s your London secret?

I’d prefer to gatekeep…

What are you up to at the moment for work?

Alongside being a new parent, we’ve just launched a new website and toolkit for my beloved charity Gurls Talk. I’ve also been working with the Kurt Geiger Kindness Foundation to spotlight their Business By Design programme that helps 18 to 20-year-olds from disadvantaged backgrounds looking to pursue careers in the creative industries. I encourage readers to check them both out.

Aside from my incredible GT team and community, Camilla Lowther, Julia Sarr-Jamois, Kesewa Aboah, Pat McGrath, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Emily Ratajkowski, Rihanna. All astronomically different in their own ways, outspoken, mysterious, passionate and savage.

Hello Kitty everything (at least a hundred items). Magnets, anything cho kawaii and mini.

Favourite work of art in London?

Tracey Emin, I Want My Time with You, at St Pancras and the Paul Day “Lovers” statue underneath. So romantic to be greeted by those when you arrive back from Europe.

Swanky in Notting Hill is great for nails. I am so lucky to have my girl Jaz Lanyero for braids — no one better.
