AI can identify patients at risk of serious arrhythmia, prevent sudden death

Artificial intelligence (AI) can help scientists identify patients at risk of a serious arrhythmia that is capable of triggering cardiac arrest and sudden death.  As part of a new study to be published in European Heart Journal, a network of artificial neurons imitating the human brain was developed by researchers from Inserm, Paris Cite University and the Paris public hospitals group (AP-HP), in collaboration with their colleagues in the US. During the analysis of data from over 240 000 ambulatory electrocardiograms, this algorithm identified patients at risk of a serious arrhythmia that was capable of triggering cardiac arrest within the following 2 weeks in over 70 per cent of cases. Each year, sudden cardiac death is responsible for over 5 million deaths worldwide. AI could help to...

Rangan Chatterjee’s secret habits that will give you a longer life

After 23 years as a GP, Chatterjee stopped practising last year to focus on teaching and advocacy. He’s written several bestsellers, including Happy Mind, Happy Life, and taken up a role as visiting professor of health education and communication at Chester Medical School. “So much of modern medicine is about deprivation,” he says. “What should we eat less of, or do less of …” His outlook is more positive: medicine can, and should, be about abundance. Identify the things you do that help you thrive, he suggests (exercise, say, or spending time with friends) and do them more often. There is a direct link, he reminds me, between happiness and longevity: those who thrive for longer live longer, too. Source link

New AI-based tool to spot cognitive impairment, prevent Alzheimer’s: Study

A team of US researchers have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) based system that may help assess cognitive impairments and curb the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease or dementia in older adults.  Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) can be an early indicator of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, so identifying people with cognitive issues early could lead to interventions and better outcomes. However, diagnosing MCI can be a long and difficult process, especially in rural areas where access to licensed neuropsychologists is limited. Researchers from the University of Missouri created a portable system that comes with a depth camera, a force plate, and an interface board. The study showed it can efficiently measure multiple aspects of motor function. The team examined older adult...

An ‘all-in-Canada’ supply chain? How ‘backward integration’ could work

As U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war escalates, federal party leaders are pitching Canadians on plans that could re-imagine the country’s economy and core supply chains. But can they work?Trump announced another threatened round of tariffs, this time on automobile imports, earlier in the week, leading Prime Minister Mark Carney to pause his election campaign as Liberal leader to focus on Canada’s response as the April 2 tariff date nears.Carney called for building Canada’s “economic autonomy” by building a fully-integrated Canadian supply chain.Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Carney said he planned on “backwards integrating” the Canadian supply chain after stating that Canada’s “old relationship” with the U.S. “is over.”Carney said Canada’s strategic response plan included “integr...

Zanzibar guide: What to eat, drink and do on the tropical archipelago

Off the coast, there’s Prison Island to visit, also known as Changuu. Located about 30 minutes by boat from Stone Town, it used to be a quarantine station for people visiting Zanzibar. A prison did follow, in 1893, and while a look around its ruins is definitely worth it, the true draw is the chance to see tortoises, and the shy Duiker: a type of tiny antelope. There are no public ferries here, but tours can usually be arranged through your hotel. Source link

Patrick Graham: ‘Pop culture wrongly suggests serial killers are evil geniuses’

He allegedly raped and strangled 16 women, was convicted on two counts of rape and murder, and is now being considered for a release after serving a 16-year prison sentence. Docubay’s documentary, The Dupatta Killer, chronicles the case of Goa’s notorious serial killer, Mahanand Naik, and his 16 victims. But director Patrick Graham—who made his writing and directorial debut with Ghoul (2018), followed by Leila (2019)—claims that his focus was on the victims, the survivor and the family left behind, not the perpetrator. Interestingly, numerous true crime stories have been written on the case, with Vijay Varma-starrer Dahaad (2023) also loosely based on it. In conversation with mid-day, Graham decodes why he doesn’t like to focus on the perpetrator when chronicling such crimes, and why he to...
