‘Hands off’: Across Canada, protesters rally against Trump

Protesters rallied in several cities across the country on Sunday to demonstrate against U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to Canadian sovereignty. Despite softer-than-expected tariffs against Canada last week and a more cordial tone from the White House of late, the echo from Trump’s repeated remarks about making Canada the 51st state continues to ring in Canadians’ ears.In Montreal, hundreds gathered in Mount Royal Park in a show of solidarity against the belittling comments, with some sporting signs dotted with maple leaves and fleur-de-lis reading, “Hands off” and “Canada is already great.” 1:49 Canada-US relationship ‘will never be the same’ after Trump tariffs, Joly warns ...

17 risk factors people can address to lower chance of ageing-related conditions

Blood pressure and kidney disease are among the 17 risk factors that people can address to reduce risk of three health conditions together -- stroke, dementia and late-life depression, according to a new study. The other risk factors identified include fasting plasma glucose, total cholesterol, diet and physical activity, sleep, purpose in life and stress, among others. Researchers from the Massachusetts General Hospital, US, said that of these, high blood pressure and severe kidney disease had the biggest impact on the incidence and burden of stroke, dementia, and late-life depression. They added that while these ageing-related conditions can be a debilitating part of growing older, people can lower their risk through behavioural and lifestyle changes. The findings have been published...

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said in Halifax in the morning that his party would tie federal housing funding for provinces and municipalities to tenant protection policies like rent control. The NDP says housing and rent prices in Canada have doubled since 2015 and the average asking rent hit $2,109 per month in January. The party also wants to ban fixed-term leases, “renovictions” and other practices it says are aimed at pushing people out of their homes and driving up rents. The Nintendo Switch 2 Is Boring, and That’s OK

The Nintendo Switch 2 is the first Nintendo console to be a direct successor to a predecessor, number and all. Sure, everyone knew what “Super Nintendo” meant, but now more than ever, Nintendo is looking to competitors like Sony for cues, aiming for a simpler and more straightforward next-gen upgrade this time around. It makes sense—the Switch was its most successful home console yet, and when Nintendo tried to follow up the Wii with the more out-of-left-field Wii U, it flopped. So why mess with success? But that strategy does leave the Switch 2 in a precarious position, especially given its hefty $450 price point (which, it turns out, might not even be final, as the company has delayed pre-orders to attempt to come up with a response to the US' recent global tariffs, which could result in...

Inside the NDP’s struggling campaign as party faces possible collapse – National

The bus is orange. The seats are carpeted. And the battle cry for the partisans on board is borrowed from the late Jack Layton: “Don’t let them tell you it can’t be done.” Layton led the NDP to its best-ever election result in 2011, when the party won 100 seats and, for the first and only time, became the official opposition.Jagmeet Singh, by contrast, is fighting to keep official party status.A Global News seat projection model, based on an aggregate of polling done up to March 24, indicates the NDP may win just three seats. To be recognized as an official party in the House of Commons — and qualify for more research funding and question period slots — a party must win 12 seats. The NDP won 24 in 2021. Story continues below advertisement ...

Young females at higher social anxiety risk due to smartphone use: Study

A team of researchers on Sunday showed that young females are more likely to experience higher social anxiety due to excessive smartphone use than other genders. The study, presented at the ‘European Psychiatric Association Congress 2025’ in Madrid, Spain, revealed that gender plays a significant role in excessive and problematic (psychological or behavioural dependence) smartphone use, with young females more likely to experience higher social anxiety than other genders. In the study, it was also found that gender was significantly linked to the amount of time spent using smartphones and the fear of being judged negatively by others online. "These results point to serious differences between genders in that females are much more likely to suffer mental ill health at the hands of a smar...

Eddie Murphy recalls Sidney Poitier`s advice that left him surprised

Actor and comedian Eddie Murphy opened up about some advice Sidney Poitier once gave him that left him surprised. In Apple TV+`s new documentary, `Number One on the Call Sheet: Black Leading Men in Hollywood`, he shared that the Oscar winner advised him not to join the cast of 1992`s `Malcom X`, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film was first directed by Norman Jewison, the director of Poitier`s In the Heat of the Night, who cast Denzel Washington in the starring role before Spike Lee took over as director. "They were talking about doing Malcolm X," Murphy recalled. "Norman Jewison was putting it together. They were gonna use The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Alex Haley. And they approached me about playing Alex Haley. Around that same time, I bumped into Sidney Poitier at somet...
