Trump ‘delighted’ by his influence on Canada’s election: U.S. journalist – National

U.S. President Donald Trump “seemed positively delighted” about the impact he had on Canada’s federal election, a U.S. journalist said while recounting a recent interview with the president. Ashley Parker was one of three writers at The Atlantic who interviewed Trump in the Oval Office for an article published late last month, before Canadians elected a Liberal minority government in last week’s election. The interview transcript includes a brief section on Canada, where Trump again said he is serious about making Canada an American state, and mused about the “close” election race between the Liberals and the Conservatives.“Trump sort of gleefully said, ‘Once I became a presence in the Canadian elections, I really turned it into a close call; I kind of threw it from the Conservatives to the...

Conservatives need ‘fine tuning,’ not overhaul after election loss: MacKay – National

Former Conservative cabinet minister Peter MacKay isn’t pointing the finger at Pierre Poilievre for the party’s loss in last week’s federal election, but he does think members of his team need to go and that the party itself needs “fine-tuning.” MacKay, who served multiple roles under former prime minister Stephen Harper and ran against Poilievre for the party leadership in 2022, says “difficult” and sometimes “painful” conversations will be had on what went wrong for the Conservatives. While he says tensions exist within the party and with some provinces, MacKay doesn’t believe that’s what led to a fourth Liberal mandate.“I don’t think it’s indicative of a party in crisis — it’s indicative of a party that’s in need of some fine-tuning, perhaps some policy and communications adjustments,” h...

Huma Qureshi takes on challenges shooting in Bhopal`s heat for Maharani 4

Maharani has become one of Huma Qureshi’s defining projects to date. Now, it’s becoming one of her most physically challenging roles. The actor, who kicked off the fourth season’s shoot in February, is currently filming in Bhopal, where the temperature has been hovering around 40 degrees.  According to a source from the unit, the drama’s Bhopal schedule is crucial, with Qureshi filming political gatherings and rallies. “Creator Subhash Kapoor shot the past three seasons in real locations. This time too, he wants to capture the rawness and realism that Bhopal offers. There are scenes where Huma’s character is addressing huge gatherings under the sun. It’s difficult to work in the scorching heat,” said the insider. When Qureshi spoke to mid-day briefly, she was excited about reprising her ...

Canada’s dependence on U.S. has decades-long evolution, experts say – National

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has repeatedly accused the Liberal government of entrenching Canada’s economic dependence on the United States. But political scientists say the reality is more complex, noting a broad trend toward continental integration of national economies that began almost 40 years ago. On the federal election trail, Poilievre decried a “lost Liberal decade” of economic stagnation. He blamed former prime minister Justin Trudeau’s government for failing to advance resource projects, allowing Canadian energy to head to the United States at a discount and losing billions of investment dollars to American companies. It is “kind of silly” to blame Trudeau for Canada’s economic reliance on the United States because it has been a “bipartisan project” since the late 1980s, s...

Gene-editing therapy shows promise against advanced colorectal cancer

The CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing technique has shown promise in fighting advanced colorectal cancer, according to results of the first-in-human clinical trial published in The Lancet Oncology.  The trial shows encouraging signs of the safety and potential effectiveness of the treatment against metastatic gastrointestinal (GI) cancers. In the study, researchers used CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing to modify a type of immune cell called tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs). They deactivated a gene called CISH and found that modified TILs were better able to recognise and attack cancer cells. "Despite many advances in understanding the genomic drivers and other factors causing cancer, with few exceptions, stage IV colorectal cancer remains a largely incurable disease," said Emil Lou, a gastrointes...

Change These Settings on Your Gaming Laptop to Save Battery and Play Longer

Gaming laptops are a great blend of portability and power, but you can usually only get one or the other at a time. Plug your laptop in and you can have top-notch graphics, but as soon as you unplug, all those polygons will drain your battery faster than you can say "Play of the game." Fortunately, there are some ways to mitigate this downside. The good news is that gaming laptop manufacturers have invested a good deal of effort into tools that will try to balance GPU performance with battery savings. Your laptop may have even come out of the box configured with some of my suggestions, but this varies widely by manufacturer, so be sure to check yours anyway. It's also important to note that battery life savings will vary widely by what type of game you play. A laptop that can last all day pl...

Unhealthy lifestyle may be accelerating ageing of the heart: Study

Unhealthy lifestyles are dramatically accelerating the ageing of the heart, contributing to a global rise in several cardiovascular diseases, finds a study, led by Indian-origin researchers in the UK. Using a new Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging technique, also known as cardiovascular MRI scan, researchers from the University of East Anglia (UEA) uncovered the "true age" of a heart. The MRI scan revealed how unhealthy lifestyles can dramatically accelerate the heart’s functional age. While among healthy people, the heart’s age was found to be similar to the chronological age, for patients with diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and atrial fibrillation, the functional heart age was significantly higher. “For example, a 50-year-old with high blood pressure might have a heart that w...

Lisa Mishra on working with Zeenat Aman in Royals: ‘I’ll never forget…`

Music and acting share a common strand, believes Lisa Mishra. “Acting, like music, is about honesty. If you’re not emotionally present, the audience knows,” she reasons. It is perhaps this commonality that has made it easy for the singer to transition to acting. After featuring in Call Me Bae (2024), Mishra will soon be seen in The Royals. While landing the role of Niki in the Netflix show — led by Zeenat Aman, Bhumi Pednekar, and Ishaan Khatter — wasn’t easy, she says the shoot was an inspiring experience. “Acting allows me to explore a different kind of emotional truth. I’ve come to love it as much as I love singing. Moreover, this was a dream cast. Every day I was a bit more inspired by the people I was working with,” she shares.  Zeenat Aman in The Royals.
