Canada’s population barely grew in first months of 2025: StatCan – National

Canada saw little growth in its population in the first three months of this year, new data from Statistics Canada shows. The data, released Wednesday, showed the population increased between Jan. 1 and April 1 by just 20,107, bringing the total number of people in Canada to 41,548,787.According to Statistics Canada, it’s the smallest quarterly growth since the third quarter of 2020, when the population dropped by 1,232 in the wake of border restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic. It also marks the sixth consecutive quarter of slower population growth and comes after the federal government announced it would lower the levels of both temporary and permanent immigration.Population levels decreased in Ontario, British Columbia, Quebec, and Newfoundland and Labrador, with Ontario and B.C. se...

Busier social life may indicate Alzheimer`s disease risk: Study

While social isolation has long been known a risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease, a new study showed that being more sociable can be an early sign of the neurodegenerative disease. The study examined the social habits and genetic data of half a million British people whose average age was 56. Researchers from the University of California San Francisco and Boston University found that Alzheimer’s may make people more sociable rather than less -- at least in the early stages. The study shows that at its earliest stage Alzheimer’s doesn’t make people less socially engaged. “Their social lives may even expand,” said co-senior author Ashwin Kotwal, from USCF. “We don’t know for sure if they are engaging more with others, or if those around them are noticing subtle changes and giving them mo...

As monsoon season begins, doctors highlight why leptospirosis can be harmful

With the arrival of the monsoon season comes a respite from heat, but not without an increased risk of some infections. While a surge in vector-borne diseases like dengue, malaria and chikungunya is common during this time of the year, leptospirosis also poses health risks, especially during the rainy season, and shouldn’t be ignored, according to health experts. After Kerala, the monsoon also arrived in Maharashtra earlier than usual this year. According to an update by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the southwest monsoon is expected to cover most parts of northwest India, including Delhi, by June 25, well ahead of the usual dates. As monsoon showers continue, it is important to watch out for specific signs and symptoms of diseases like leptospirosis. Causes and symptoms D...

Anuj Sachdeva: If given the right space and opportunity, I can outperform myself

With almost two decades in the industry — dabbling in television, Hindi and Punjabi films, and diverse roles in digital entertainment — Anuj Sachdeva still feels he hasn’t received his due. He confesses that although he has the potential to do more, the opportunities coming his way remain few and far between. “I genuinely believe I can bring more to the table, emotionally, physically, creatively. If given the right space and opportunity, I can outperform myself; and that’s not coming from arrogance, just self-awareness,” says the actor, whose recent show Chhal Kapat received a mixed response. While he’s aware that it’s impossible to please everyone, he’s thrilled that the show,  also starring Shriya Pilgaonkar, is slowly “gaining momentum”. “I wasn’t expecting the kind of love it’s gettin...

G7 leaders agree on AI adoption, critical minerals, but not Ukraine

Leaders of the G7 have reached agreements on a “human-centric approach” to artificial intelligence adoption, fighting transnational oppression and creating standards-based markets for critical minerals, but not on holding Russia to account for its war in Ukraine or securing a ceasefire in the Middle East. The seven world leaders wrapped up their summit in Alberta Tuesday without a unified communique on shared views, which has been the standard after past gatherings.Rather, the summit produced a series of joint statements on issues ranging from artificial intelligence and quantum computing to migrant smuggling and transnational repression.A wider group of signatories, which includes Australia, India and South Korea, are committing to work together to invest in responsible critical minerals ...

Carney praises India’s Modi after G7 condemns ‘transnational repression’ – National

Prime Minister Mark Carney met Tuesday with his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, whose government has been singled out by Canadian intelligence officials as a prolific perpetrator of foreign interference in Canada, including transnational repression. As their bilateral meeting began, Carney said it was “a great honour” to host Modi at the G7.“It’s a testament to the importance of your country, to your leadership, and to the importance of the issues that we look to tackle together,” Carney said, noting that includes the energy transition, the future of AI and the fight against transnational repression and terrorism.Speaking through a translator, Modi said he thinks it joining the G7 summit was a great opportunity to serve the global good.“I believe that India-Canada relations are extremel...
