Why the New, Cheaper Kindle Colorsoft (Probably) Isn’t Worth the Savings

We may earn a commission from links on this page. Either Amazon’s Kindle Colorsoft isn’t selling well enough, or the competition is selling better, because the company appears to have quietly released a new, cheaper version starting late yesterday. It was all over my Amazon app when I opened it this afternoon, and it’s being promoted to the point where I can’t find the old model outside of bundles and direct links to it. The problem? It comes with a bunch of compromises, and is just $30 less.It does, however, fill a hole in the Kindle lineup. Previously, the Kindle Colorsoft was only available as a “Signature Edition,” meaning it had bonuses like wireless charging, auto-brightness, and extra storage thrown in. This new model finally gives the Colorsoft a “standard” ve...

Vaccines prevented over 2.5 million Covid-19 deaths worldwide: Study

Vaccines prevented more than 2.5 million deaths from SARS-CoV-2, the virus behind Covid-19 infections, worldwide, according to a study. The study, led by researchers from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Italy, showed that one Covid death was avoided for every 5,400 doses of vaccine administered. Some 82 per cent of the lives saved by vaccines involved people vaccinated before encountering the virus, 57 per cent during the Omicron period, and 90 per cent involved people aged 60 years and older. In all, vaccines have saved 14.8 million years of life (one year of life saved for 900 doses of vaccine administered), revealed the findings, published in the journal Jama Health Forum. "Before ours, several studies tried to estimate lives saved by vaccines with different models an...

Four Things I Already Like About the Galaxy Watch 8

We may earn a commission from links on this page. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 8 starts shipping today, and I just got my hands on a Watch8 Classic model to start reviewing. You’ll have to wait a bit for the full report, but here’s what I’m enjoying (and questioning) so far. I’m new to Galaxy Watches in general, but I’ve reviewed Pixel and Apple watches, not to mention plenty of Garmins and other fitness watches. Here are my first impressions, including the things I like, and the things I’m most excited to test out in the coming days.  Credit: Beth Skwarecki As promised, the Watch 8 Classic comes with a bezel that rotates, and t...

When Twinkle asked Kajol if being an actor, she ever worries about aging, she revealed that, as a matter of fact, she does worry about it. Kajol shared that, according to her, aging has to do with energy more than the lines on your face. "I think people look at how you are saying what you`re saying. I feel more than the lines on the face, age shows in people`s eyes, when they get tired, when they get bored of what they are doing- t...

Over 9 pc of world`s land area under high risk of zoonotic outbreak: Study

Over nine per cent of the world`s land area is at "high" or "very high" risk of a zoonotic outbreak -- triggered when an infection spreads from an animal to a human or vice versa, such as the Covid pandemic, according to a study. Findings published in the journal Science Advances also estimate 3 per cent of the global population to be living in extremely risky areas, and about a fifth in medium-risk areas. Researchers, including those from the European Commission`s Joint Research Centre (JRC) Scientific Development Programmes Unit in Italy, analysed location-specific information from the `Global Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology Network` dataset and the World Health Organization`s (WHO) list of diseases prioritised according to their potential for causing an epidemic or a pandemic. Google Might Have Made an AI Search Product I Actually Like

Google is back with yet another AI-powered Search feature. But unlike AI Overviews, which attempts to summarize an answer to your search, or AI Mode, which uses generative AI to try to return results that are more detailed and useful, "Web Guide" is much simpler: It aims to make your search results easier to look at and surface links you wouldn't have found otherwise.Google announced Web Guide in a short blog post on Thursday, and there's really not much to it. When you enable the feature in Google Labs, you're able to try it out along any search query you want. Google suggests "open-ended" searches, like "how to solo travel in Japan" or "detailed queries," like “My family is spread across multiple time zones. What are the best tools for staying connected and maintaining close relationship...

Hepatitis B drugs vastly underused, must be used early to save lives: Lancet

Hepatitis B drugs are being vastly underused, and boosting early treatment against the deadly hepatitis B virus (HBV) could save many lives over time, argued scientists in a new paper published in Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology.  HBV kills over 3,000 people every day, or over 2 people every minute. Of the people who do not clear the infection and go on to develop a chronic HBV infection, between 20 and 40 per cent will die if they do not receive treatment. The experts noted that even though the currently available drugs do not cure people, they are safe, effective, and relatively inexpensive. "These medications are good drugs that are being badly underused," said John Tavis, Professor of molecular microbiology and immunology at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. "Less t...
