Veteran B.C. MLA barred from federal Conservative run says Tories must fix nominations

A longtime B.C. MLA who was barred from running for the Conservative party in the April federal election said the Tories need to do a deep dive into their nomination processes — but he has little faith that will happen. Michael de Jong said too much power has been centralized with the party’s leadership in Ottawa and he’s not alone in feeling frustrated with the way nominations were run.But he said the party’s leadership has shown little willingness to acknowledge fault.Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre told a podcast this week that the party’s support in the April 28 election “didn’t actually come down that much” compared to January, when it was projected to sweep to a huge majority. 2:10 B...

Early puberty may increase chances of mental health issues: Study

An earlier-than-usual onset of puberty could be related with a higher chance of mental health issues, with incidence of depression and ADHD remaining high for at least eight years following onset, a study has found. `Central precocious puberty` is a condition in which physical changes associated with this stage of growth begin early -- before age eight for girls, nine for boys. Researchers, including those from University Hospital Essen, Germany, looked at over 6,500 individuals -- around 1,100 who had early puberty and the rest who did not -- using the country`s health insurance data, following them for 13 years. Findings, published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Network Open, show that those who attained puberty early were about 50 per cent more likely to be...

What is NATO’s new 5% defence spending pledge, and how will Canada meet it? – National

Canada joined its NATO allies on Wednesday in agreeing to a new defence spending target of five per cent of GDP — but the details are more complicated. Members of the alliance will have until 2035 to reach the new spending goal, for one thing. And the five per cent is being split into two categories: “core defence requirements” and broader defence-related infrastructure and industry.Speaking to reporters at The Hague at the NATO summit, Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed confidence that Canada will achieve its new objectives after lagging behind the alliance’s spending goals for years.“We’ve arrived at this summit looking forward with a plan to help lead with new investments to build our strength,” he said.“The investments we’re making in defence and security, broader security, given the...

Three Key New Features and Changes I’m Excited About in the Second macOS Tahoe Beta

I'm pretty excited about macOS Tahoe. Apple's annual operating system upgrade is poised to introduce a number of exciting new features and changes, including a fresh design and an upgraded Spotlight Search. Tahoe won't be available to the general public for a while, as the OS is still in beta testing as Apple irons out the kinks. To that end, the company dropped the second beta for macOS Tahoe this week, and it includes three key features I'm particularly interested in.AirPods beta enrollmentSpeaking of beta testing, did you know that Apple has a beta program for AirPods? If you didn't, that's probably by design, since up until now, only developers could enroll their AirPods in the beta. That's now changing: With Apple's latest releases this fall, users will be able to opt-in to the AirPod...

Feds to table bill with tougher bail, sentencing provisions in fall: Fraser – National

The Liberal government will table a bill this fall introducing stricter bail conditions and sentencing for some crimes, particularly those involving organized crime, human trafficking, home invasion and car theft, Justice Minister Sean Fraser said in an interview. “It’s perhaps obvious, given the tenor around the criminal justice system, that reforms are in order,” Fraser told The Canadian Press. The government will consider including additional reforms but “at minimum” will implement the crime policies the Liberals promised during the spring federal election, Fraser said.Fraser was named justice minister by Prime Minister Mark Carney in May, following an election campaign which saw Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre blame the Liberals for a wave of violent crime. In their campaign platfor...

NATO leaders to debate proposed hike to defence spending – National

NATO leaders are meeting to debate whether to more than double the alliance’s defence spending target. Prime Minister Mark Carney is among the leaders around the table at the annual leaders’ summit in The Hague, where a proposal is being discussed to increase the target to five per cent of annual GDP, up from the current two per cent.NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte’s proposal would break that into two parts. The first 3.5 per cent would be for core defence needs such as jets and weapons, while the remaining 1.5 per cent would be on defence-adjacent investments including infrastructure and cybersecurity. Before the official meeting of the North Atlantic Council, Carney held bilateral meetings with the prime minister of New Zealand, Christopher Luxon, and the prime minister of Estonia, Kris...

Diddy’s lawyers request acquittal on all counts after prosecution rests case – National

The prosecution rested Tuesday at Sean “Diddy” Combs ’ sex trafficking trial, capping a more than six-week-long presentation of evidence against the hip-hop maven that confronted him with former employees and two former girlfriends who expressed regret at his treatment of them over the past two decades. After the prosecution rested, Combs’ lawyers asked U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian to halt the trial immediately and throw out the charges, arguing the charges weren’t proven. The government rested after defence lawyer Teny Geragos finished questioning the prosecution’s final witness: Joseph Cerciello, a Homeland Security Investigations agent.Prosecutors have cited the “freakoffs” as proof of the sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy charges that resulted in Combs’ arrest last Sep...

India among 8 countries with half of world`s unvaccinated kids as of 2023: Study

India was among the eight countries where more than half the unvaccinated children from around the world lived as of 2023, an analysis published in The Lancet journal showed, "emphasising persistent inequities." Providing global estimates of current vaccine coverage, the study found that the same year, there were 15.7 million children -- 1.44 million in India -- who had received no doses of the diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis vaccine in their first year. An international team of researchers forming the `Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2023 Vaccine Coverage Collaborators` updated global, regional, and national estimates of routine childhood vaccine coverage from 1980 to 2023 for 204 countries and territories. In 1980, 53.5 per cent of children who had never received a routine childhood...
