Mumbai doctors help Worli woman hear again by performing surgery while awake

In one of the many medical miracles of this week, a hospital in Mumbai has performed cochlear implant surgery on a patient while she was awake. It not only gave her hope of getting her ability to hear back again but also ended her challenge, which she had to deal with for the last three years.  The surgery conducted at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre in Peddar Road, was done on a 19-year-old girl from Worli, who lost her hearing due to anti-TB treatment. She underwent the innovative procedure under local anesthesia.  It was conducted by a team of ENT surgeons led by Dr Brajendra Baser who was assisted by Dr Umendra Agihari and Dr Divya Prabhat along with anesthesiologist Dr Rajani. The patient was brought to tears as she heard sounds for the first time in three years on the operat...

I Traded My Garmin for a Coros Fitness Watch, and Here’s What I Loved (and Hated)

We may earn a commission from links on this page. Garmin dominates the running watch market, even as runners have an increasing number of other options to choose from, including Suunto and Coros. I've long been a faithful Garmin user, but I wanted to give one of these competitors a fair shake, so for about six weeks (including the full month of July), I decided to test out how well a Coros could serve as my main running watch. So I set my daily wear Garmin Forerunner 265S aside in favor of a Coros Pace 3 and Pace Pro, swapping between them as the mood struck me. While I didn't come out of it a convert, I did learn a lot. Here's what I loved and hated—or at least found irritating—along the way.How I started the switch from Garmin to CorosI normally use Garmin to store ...

Diabetes may worsen TB, increase risk of death due to the condition: Experts

Diabetes continually weakens the immune system, leading to poor health and a high risk of death among patients with tuberculosis (TB), said experts on Tuesday. The link between TB and diabetes -- two critical challenges to global health -- has long been established. TB and diabetes, both separately and combined, significantly affect individuals, communities, and healthcare systems worldwide. India`s TB burden remains a major public health challenge, with 28 lakh TB cases -- accounting for 26 per cent, the highest globally in 2024. The country also reported an estimated 3.15 lakh TB-related deaths, accounting for 29 per cent of the deaths globally. The burden of diabetes is also consistently increasing in the country, with over 100 million people currently living with the disease. “Diab...

Vikkas Manaktala gets candid about facing financial crunch amid career setbacks

It’s been weeks since the première of Special Ops 2, but actor Vikkas Manaktala — who made his web debut with the Neeraj Pandey series — is still basking in gratitude. The project came after years of waiting and watching offers fall through, some even days before filming. A new entrant in the Special Ops universe, which also stars Kay Kay Menon, Manaktala plays an R&AW agent. “Web offers had been coming to me for some time. I was, in fact, supposed to star in another Neeraj Pandey project, but it didn’t work out. I was almost signed for many films, [then] asked to wait, and [for some, even] my dates were blocked. But none materialised,” shares the actor. Despite financial challenges, Manaktala never stopped chasing work that truly excited him, even when returning to TV was an option. ...

‘Superficial’ to compare Canada, Mexico approaches to U.S. tariffs: Anand – National

Foreign Minister Anita Anand said Tuesday it would be “superficial” to compare the approaches Canada and Mexico have taken to navigating trade negotiations with the United States, given how different their economic relationships with the U.S. are, despite only Canada facing rising tariffs. Anand and Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne met with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and their ministerial counterparts in Mexico City to talk economic growth, trade and security. The two-day trip comes as many Canadians wonder why the U.S. hit Canada on Friday with a 35 per cent tariff on goods not compliant with the Canada-United States-Mexico agreement on trade, known as CUSMA, while Mexico received a 90-day reprieve from threatened higher U.S. levies. The U.S. counts Canada and Mexico a...

Texas governor orders arrest of ‘delinquent’ Democrats who fled to block vote – National

Texas Republicans are moving to arrest a group of legislators who fled the state to restrict the government’s ability to reconfigure electoral boundaries in a manner they say would diminish the voting power of minority groups. On Monday, Texas State Gov. Greg Abbott accused the defectors of abandoning their duties and breaking the law.“By fleeing the state, Texas House Democrats are holding hostage critical legislation to aid flood victims and advance property tax relief. There are consequences for dereliction of duty,” he said in a press release.“Speaker Dustin Burrows just issued a call of the Texas House and issued warrants to compel members to return to the chamber,” he continued.“To ensure compliance, I ordered the Texas Department of Public Safety to locate, arrest, and return to the...

Like taking nap breaks? It may help improve performance, finds study

A new study explains a possible reason why sometimes taking a nap break helps people perform better when they resume a task -- during sleep, short-term information related to the task at hand is converted into long-term, stronger memory, researchers found. The team, led by researchers from Harvard Medical School, US, monitored brain activity of 25 participants as they were learning a typing sequence, followed by taking a nap. During sleep, areas in the cortex -- brain`s outermost layer that helps with higher-level functions such as memory -- that were active while the participants worked showed more rhythmic, repetitive patterns, indicating that information related to the task is being processed, the team found. The results, published in the Journal of Neuroscience, also show that an in...
