Mumbai, influenced by Cyclone Biparjoy, witnesses strong tides, gusty winds, and rain, with more expected in the near future. On Sunday, June 11, the cyclone ran parallel to Mumbai in the Arabian Sea, gradually revealing its impact on the city. Since the beginning of the weekend, Mumbai has experienced windy conditions, which are anticipated to intensify with stronger gusts and isolated rainfall over the next one or two days.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that Cyclone Biparjoy is currently an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm situated over the east-central Arabian Sea. As of Sunday evening, it has reached its peak strength, with wind speeds ranging from 165-175 kmph and gusts up to 195 kmph.
As the cyclone continues its north-northeastward movement, gale winds of 160-170 kmph, gusting to 190 kmph, are expected over the east-central Arabian Sea within the next 24 hours.
The impact of the cyclone will extend to the Maharashtra coast, particularly affecting urban and suburban regions of Mumbai. These areas can anticipate partly cloudy skies, isolated thundershowers, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph over the next 24-48 hours.
In light of these predictions, the regional meteorological center in Mumbai, IMD, has issued a yellow watch for Sunday and Monday, June 11-12, urging residents to stay informed about the local weather conditions.
In addition to its direct impact on Mumbai, the cyclone is expected to assist the progress of the southwest monsoon over parts of Coastal Maharashtra in the coming days, according to reports.
As the presence of Cyclone Biparjoy becomes more evident in the sea, early effects of this extremely severe storm on Mumbai’s coastal areas can be observed.
