Knee replacement was previously linked to older age. However, currently, various factors such as obesity, previous injuries, demanding lifestyles, and untreated joint problems are now raising the chances of knee problems in young adults in their 40s.
Currently, there is a surge in the number of people requiring knee replacements. Previously, knee replacement was only linked to older people. But now, many people in their 40s are suffering from unbearable knee pain that is interfering with their daily routine. They also having joint damage that can require knee replacement surgeries. However, when the cartilage is severely damaged and pain begins to affect walking, sleep, work, and everyday activities, surgery may be considered after other treatments have been explored.
Mumbai doctors highlight causes of knee pain
Dr Ranjan Burnwal, orthopedic surgeon, Apollo Spectra Hospital in Mumbai says, “Obesity is now leading to knee problems in young adults. Excess body weight increases the load placed on the knee with every step and can cause wear and tear. It can also lead to inflammation and osteoarthritis. Younger adults who have been overweight for several years may suffer from joint problems earlier than expected that can steal their peace of mind. Even previous sports injuries, ligament tears, meniscus injuries, and fractures can also damage the knee and increase the risk of arthritis later in life. Arthritis is now happening almost 1 decade earlier than previous. High-impact activities performed without proper technique, inadequate muscle strength or repeated injuries can further stress the joint. Genetics, abnormal alignment of the legs, and certain inflammatory joint conditions may also contribute. We first check the extent of damage and consider weight management, physiotherapy, and strengthening exercises. Surgery is considered when there is extreme pain, and it tends to interfere with the daily routine.”
Dr. Srisanat Rao, orthopedic & joint replacement surgeon, Zynova Shalby Hospital in Ghatkopar adds, “Young adults should not ignore persistent knee pain simply because they feel they are too young to have arthritis. Repeated swelling, stiffness, difficulty climbing stairs, reduced walking ability, or pain that interferes with sleep should be evaluated. Maintaining a healthy weight, building strong thigh and hip muscles, treating sports injuries properly, and choosing low-impact activities can help protect the knees. So, make sure to undergo knee replacement if advised by the expert. Knee replacement can reduce pain and improve mobility and overall quality of life by restoring knee function. The patients become more active and independent after the surgery.”
