Ellu – Nuvvulu Pudi | Sesame Seeds Chutney Powder Recipe

Here’s a delicious and healthy Sesame Seeds Chutney Powder, also known as Ellu – Nuvvulu Pudi, in Karnataka style. This spice powder is a popular condiment served with rice, idli, and dosa in North Karnataka. While traditionally it is made with Gurellu or Uchellu (Niger seeds), this recipe uses regular sesame seeds, and it offers a delightful tangy and sweet taste.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup Black Sesame Seeds
  • 1 tsp Red Chili Powder
  • 1 tsp Jaggery
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • Small Gooseberry-sized Tamarind
  • Salt (as needed)
  • 2 tsp Cooking Oil
  • 5 Garlic Cloves
  • 1 tbsp Dry Coconut (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Dry roast the sesame seeds in a kadai until they start to splutter. Transfer them to a plate and let them cool down.
  2. In the same kadai, heat oil and add cumin seeds. Switch off the flame and add red chili powder and salt. Mix well in the heat of the oil.
  3. Take the cooled sesame seeds in a mixie jar. Add the roasted chili powder, salt, jaggery, raw garlic cloves, and tamarind to the mixie jar.
  4. Grind everything into a powder. Check for taste and let it cool down completely.
  5. Store the Ellu Pudi in a box and enjoy it with plain rice, idli, and dosa.

Note:

  • Adjust the quantity of chili powder according to your taste preferences.
  • You can use black or white sesame seeds for this recipe.
