Donald Trump declares himself ‘father of IVF’ in front of all-female audience

By Gregory Krieg and Kate Sullivan, CNN Donald Trump. File photo Photo: AFP Donald Trump has declared himself the "father of IVF", a fertility treatment that has come under threat following the US Supreme Court's 2022 decision to overturn Roe v Wade. It is unclear what precisely the former president meant when he made the comment at a Fox News town hall in battleground Georgia that was billed as focusing on women's issues and had an all-female audience. But he has repeatedly returned to the issue - talking up his support for IVF - on the campaign trail, where he has given a long series of confusing or contradictory answers about his stance on abortion. "We really are the party for IVF," Trump told moderator and Fox News host Harris Faulkner on "The Faulkner Focus." "We want fertilisa...

Photo: AFP / File Fifteen days after turning 100, former US president Jimmy Carter cast his vote in the US election, fulfilling an earlier declared wish to live long enough to back Kamala Harris in the poll. The former Democratic leader "voted by mail," according to the Carter Center, the non-profit he founded after he left the White House in 1981 to pursue his vision of world diplomacy. The centenarian - who left office under a cloud of unpopularity, but has seen his star rise ever since - took advantage of early voting in his home state of Georgia, where he is receiving hospice care. Carter had told his family earlier this year that living long enough t...

India’s alleged interference in Canada was ‘horrific mistake,’ Justin Trudeau says

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau attends a press conference on 14 October 2024, on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, after Canada expelled six top Indian diplomats, including the country's ambassador. Photo: AFP / DAVE CHAN Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says India made "a horrific mistake" by thinking it could interfere as aggressively as it allegedly did in Canada's sovereignty. Trudeau made the remark two days after Canada kicked out six Indian diplomats, linking them to the murder of a Sikh separatist leader in Canada and alleging a broader effort to target Indian dissidents in the country. The Canadian leader's comments were the strongest he has made in a year-long dispute that plunged bilateral relations to a new low. "The Indian government made a horrific mistake in thinki...

US says Israel must show it has no ‘policy of starvation’ in Gaza

By Michelle Nichols, Reuters The UN has long complained of obstacles to getting aid into Gaza. Photo: BASHAR TALEB/AFP The United States is watching to ensure that Israel's actions on the ground show that it does not have a "policy of starvation" in the northern Gaza Strip, US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield told the Security Council. She told the 15-member council that such a policy would be "horrific and unacceptable and would have implications under international law and US law." "The Government of Israel has said that this is not their policy, that food and other essential supplies will not be cut off, and we will be watching to see that Israel's actions on the ground match this statement," Thomas-Greenfield said, in a ratcheting up of the US posture toward its longt...
