Wildfire season is starting. How Canadian leaders plan to respond – National

After two of the worst years for wildfires on record, Canada’s fire season is getting started in parts of the country against the backdrop of the federal election. Wildfire season typically runs from late April or early May until around August. Yet wildfires or climate change in general have largely taken a backseat in the campaign so far.An Ipsos poll done exclusively for Global News that was released April 13 found that climate change was ranked 12th in terms of key issues for Canadian voters, bumped down from the 10th spot when similar polling was done before the election campaign.Climate was among the issues discussed in the leaders’ debates last week, but there was little mention of wildfires by the four party leaders in attendance. But cost of living is the top priority, polling shows...

ANALYSIS: Voters surge to advance polls for a most ‘consequential’ election – National

In 2015, as a Liberal wave swept Justin Trudeau to a majority government, the Conservative candidate in the riding of Carleton barely managed to avoid being swamped on election day. That candidate, Pierre Poilievre, won by just 705 votes over his Liberal rival whose support, like many Liberals across the country, was surging in the final week. The totals in Carleton: 42,428 votes cast with 46 per cent going to Poilievre. His Liberal rival, Chris Rogers, was less than three points back at 44.3 per cent. But close as election day was, it was not so close in the advance polls. Among the 15,407 ballots cast in Carleton’s advance polls, like the ones across the country this weekend, Poilievre scored 49.6 per cent of the vote, well ahead of the Liberal at 41.5 per cent. That trend is typical for m...

Easter Sunday finds Liberals in Ottawa, NDP and Conservatives in B.C. – National

Canadians continued to head to advance polls Sunday as federal leaders campaigned in B.C. and in the capital. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre kicked the day off at a grocery store in Surrey, B.C., with another announcement on inflation.Arguing that a reduction in government spending would ease inflation, Poilievre said a Conservative government would cut Ottawa’s annual budget for consultants by $10 billion.“Inflation is what happens when governments spend money they don’t have, so they just print the cash. More money bidding on a fixed supply of goods equals higher prices for everything,” he said. 2:04 Poilievre yet to release Tory platform, takes aim at Carney’s plan in...

Between Trump’s trade war and an election, Carney undergoes baptism by fire – National

By most measures, Mark Carney’s resume is stacked. Chief of central banks for two G7 countries. Investment banker. International climate finance expert. An economics degree from Harvard University. A masters and a PhD in economics from Oxford. He even has hockey on his list of accomplishments, having played as a backup goalie for Harvard during his years there. That’s a plus for a politician in a country that just last week changed the time of a national leaders’ debate so it didn’t conflict with a Montreal Canadiens game. 1:55 Prime Minister Mark Carney meets with Alberta premier, makes housing announcement in Edmonton But the one thing his re...

Poilievre promises to end ban on single-use plastic straws, other items – National

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre promised to strike down a key element of the Liberal government’s environmental policy Friday as he and other party leaders got back on the campaign trail following the national leaders’ debates in Montreal. The campaigning Friday also coincided with the opening of the first of four days of advance polling across the country. Both Poilievre and NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh stayed in Quebec to make announcements Friday morning, while Liberal Leader Mark Carney made his way to Niagara Falls, Ont.Carney used the border city as a backdrop for further comments about how U.S. President Donald Trump and his tariffs have changed Canada’s relationship with its closest neighbour — once again framing the election around an issue that helped rejuvenate Liberal support.“...

Liberal Party of Canada releases late-stage election platform – National

The Liberal party released a late-stage election platform Saturday that pledges billions in new spending and charts a major change in priorities from the party’s direction in 2021 under former prime minister Justin Trudeau. Liberal Leader Mark Carney released his platform after the only two debates of the campaign concluded, and a day after advanced voting began. It also lands in the middle of a stop-and-go trade war with the United States, Canada’s largest trading partner, and shows the path Carney is trying to chart toward reducing Canada’s reliance on the U.S. and increasing trade and economic activity at home.“It’s time to build again, big time,” he said, surrounded by dozens of supporters at Durham College in Whitby, Ont.He was also flanked by Quebec Liberal candidate and current Finan...

Federal NDP pledges mental-health coverage, non-Tesla EV rebates – National

The federal NDP are pledging tax reforms, mental-health coverage and more homebuilders in their costed electoral platform, as well as a promised wealth tax on the “super rich” which it says could raise upwards of $22 billion each year. The platform calls for a net increase of $48 billion to the federal deficit over four years, a tally that already builds in large offsets from that anticipated tax revenue from the rich.“No nurse, no teacher, no tradesperson should pay more than a billionaire flipping stocks,” NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said at an event in Burnaby, B.C.He says Canada must defend values like health care instead of following U.S. President Donald Trump’s lead of chipping away at public services.“We won’t let Trump’s trade war become your burden to carry,” he said.
