How Harris and Trump plan to woo voters on eve of Election Day – National

A presidential campaign that has careened through a felony trial, an incumbent president being pushed off the ticket and multiple assassination attempts comes down to a final push across a handful of states on the eve of Election Day. Kamala Harris will spend all of Monday in Pennsylvania, whose 19 electoral votes offer the largest prize among the states expected to determine the Electoral College outcome. The vice president and Democratic nominee will visit working-class areas including Allentown and end with a late-night Philadelphia rally that includes Lady Gaga and Oprah Winfrey.Donald Trump plans four rallies in three states, beginning in Raleigh, North Carolina and stopping twice in Pennsylvania with events in Reading and Pittsburgh. The Republican nominee and former president ends h...

As PBO says NATO target plan is off, here’s why it matters to the military – National

Canada’s defence spending shortfalls are having a real impact on the Canadian Armed Forces, a former military leader says, and revelations about “significant” errors in the government’s plan to increase that spending means those issues may continue longer than promised. Retired general Tom Lawson, who served as chief of the defence staff from 2012 to 2015, says pressure may have to come not just from Canada’s international allies but also from Canadians themselves in order to effect real change to how the government invests in its military and defence.Failing to do so can affect overall combat readiness in the future, he adds — which could impact the U.S.-Canada relationship in particular.“When you look at the military that I was in charge of 10 years ago and the military that exists today...

‘Fairly high’ potential for post-U.S. election violence, ‘chaos’: ex-envoy – National

Canada has a lot to feel anxious about as the U.S. presidential election draws to a close, but a former diplomat between the two countries says he’s particularly worried about “chaos” after the vote — including the “fairly high” potential for violence. David MacNaughton, who served as Canada’s ambassador to the U.S. from 2016 to 2019, says he’s confident Canada can handle a future Donald Trump or Kamala Harris administration despite the challenges each one would pose. But with polls showing an extremely close race, MacNaughton says he’s hopeful the result is clear enough to avoid a contested result like that of the 2000 U.S. election, which went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.“You can just imagine the turmoil that would go on,” he told Mercedes Stephenson in an interview that aired S...

‘We are scared’: Gen Z may hold the keys to the White House, and the parties know it – National

It felt like his future was at stake when 18-year-old Carter Fay cast an early ballot in the United States election. “The reality is that our democracy, I truly think, is on the line. And so do people in my generation,” said Fay, who’s from the battleground state of Georgia.“To put it straight, we are scared.”Fay is among an estimated eight million generation-Z voters who can take part in a presidential election for the very first time. There’s power behind this generation, which is angry at the current political system and worried about its future. And the race to the White House still looks to be a dead heat. Many young people were dismayed when it appeared the election would be a repeat of the 2020 matchup between President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump. When will we know the winner of the U.S. election? Likely not right away – National

The U.S. presidential race between U.S. Vice-President Kamala Harris and Donald Trump is expected to be extremely close, which means the winner may not be known until after Nov. 5. One key reason why is that election workers across the country will have to count millions of mail-in ballots — including in key battleground states that each have their own rules for handling and counting those votes.Early voting numbers suggest turnout is expected to be high. Roughly 70 million Americans have already cast a ballot in either early voting or by mail, and more than 67 million mail-in ballots have been requested, according to the University of Florida’s Election Lab.Almost two-thirds of U.S. voters cast an early ballot in 2020 — more than 100 million votes — as the COVID-19 pandemic fuelled an exp...

Why so many elections in 2024? Chalk it up to the ‘beauty of math,’ says professor

Tuesday’s vote in the United States may be dominating social media feeds, but it is just one of more than 70 national elections that will have taken place this year by the end of December. Mauritanians went to the polls in June, the same month Mexico elected its first female president and Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared victory in India. Azerbaijanis and Indonesians voted in February. Iceland goes to the polls on Nov. 30, Ghana on Dec. 7.“This is the biggest election year in human history,” the United Nations Development Program says on its website. “Half of the world’s population — some 3.7 billion people — will have the opportunity to go to the polls in 72 countries.”In Canada alone, four provinces held or will hold provincial elections this year: New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, Briti...

Supporters share cautious optimism and anxiety ahead of divisive U.S. election – National

Tens of thousands of people from opposite sides of the political divide gathered at duelling rallies in Wisconsin on Friday, hosted by Vice-President Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump as they made a final push for votes in the critical swing state. “It feels great,” said William Dahms, holding a giant Trump 2024 flag outside the arena in Milwaukee where Trump rallied supporters later that evening. “It’s a beautiful day. I took the day off from work and here I am.”Republicans and Democrats are both vying for Wisconsin’s 10 electoral college votes. Trump narrowly squeaked out a Wisconsin win in 2016 and it swung back to President Joe Biden in 2020.The candidates are spending the final weekend before the election in battleground states that could ultimately hold the key to the W...

‘Election seems really close’: Americans in Canada cast ballot ahead of U.S. election

Stephen Winters says watching the U.S. election campaign from Canada as a dual citizen is like a parent watching their kid play sports. “When you’re on the sideline it makes you more nervous than when you’re in it,” Winters said in an interview from Calgary.“My friends and family at home are like, ‘Don’t worry that much’ because they’re there and they know things are going OK. When you’re outside, it can look worse than it is.”Winters, from Minnesota, teaches linguistics at the University of Calgary. He is one of about 600,000 eligible voters in Canada able to cast their vote in Tuesday’s election.Winters said he has cast his absentee ballot but has taken a step back from reading political news because of how helpless he feels afterwards.
