For a few years now, Instagram has gone all-in on videos. Instagram Reels have taken over the platform, and you might now be tempted to take these new videos into your editing bay. If you spot an Instagram video that you'd like to download, there are multiple ways to do so. Previously, there were many more methods for this, but most of them no longer work, or now require you to give untrusted apps access to your Instagram account. Luckily, there are still ways to download Instagram videos that don't involve too many caveats, including ones that don't require you to log in.The official method to download Instagram videos Credit: Pranay Parab Ther...

If you want to keep tabs on your kids, but don't want to give them a smartphone or smartwatch yet, an AirTag seems like it'd be the perfect solution—especially if that AirTag was designed to sneakily slip inside their sneaker. That's the idea behind Skechers' new sneaker line for kids, dubbed, appropriately, Find My Skechers. The pitch is simple: For all intents and purposes, these are your average children's sneakers, save for a clever AirTag compartment hidden underneath the insert. It seems smart: You lift up the insert, pop out the plastic cover, pop in an AirTag, and cover the whole thing up. Then, you send your kid off into the world, knowing you can track their whereabouts at any time. Unfortunately, that's not how AirTags work. AirTags can be a great tool for keeping a general e...

Authenticators from Google and Microsoft are already well-established, but the newly released Proton Authenticator may be worth the switch. Proton is the company behind Proton Pass, our top password manager for those who prioritize privacy, as well as other services like Proton Mail and Proton VPN. While Proton Pass has an integrated two-factor authentication (2FA) feature on its premium tier, anyone can use Proton Authenticator at no cost, even if you rely on a different service for password management. How Proton compares to other authenticator appsFunctionally, Proton Authenticator isn't that different than other popular apps like Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator or alternatives like Duo and Authy. You can add time-based one-time passwords (TOTPs) manually or by scanning...

The new lineup of M4 MacBook Airs had a ripple effect on all of the other MacBooks, but the M1 is seeing a particularly big discount. Walmart has the M1 MacBook Air 13.3-inch laptop for $599 (originally $999.99), which is $100 cheaper since the M4 was released, according to price-tracking tools. Although the M4 is $799.99 and a better value for your money, not everyone will be able to afford it. For those who need the extra cash in hand, the M1 MacBook Air is a good deal still in 20...

When Apple dropped iOS 18.6 this week, it didn't ship a bunch of new features and changes. Indeed, when you update your iPhone, it'll appear exactly as it did running iOS 18.5. Under the hood, however, the update introduced more than 20 patches for security vulnerabilities across iOS, making it an important security update for all compatible devices. When Apple released its security notes for the update, it did not indicate whether any of the flaws were zero-days—in other words, whether any of the flaws had been exploited or publicly disclosed before a patch was readily available. That puts the user at an advantage, since it suggests bad actors haven't figured out how to take advantage of any of the now-fixed flaws. However, as it turns out, one of these flaws was actively exploited—just no...

Moving into a new home can be scary. No matter the reason for leaving your current spot—whether it’s rising rent, quality of life issues, or something more positive like a new job opportunity—your old home was comfortable and familiar. You knew what the problems were and what to expect each day. A new house is a blank slate. And so is the neighborhood you’re moving into. It might be a charming, friendly stretch that welcomes you like a friend, or it might be a tense, unhappy block that raises your stress levels. Research and surveillance are always good ideas when considering a move to a new neighborhood, but there’s one more step you should always take before signing a lease or buying a place: Ask your potential new neighbors a few crucial questions. The folks who already live in that neig...

After years of working out in the summer sun, I've become a connoisseur of sunscreens. I'll wear this stick for my face, that cream on my hands for shorter runs, this spray for long trail runs—and that's aside from slipping on a sun shirt to provide my primary upper-body protection. The exact formulation of each sunscreen matters, so let me tell you what to look for in order to be a discerning customer. Before we get into it, I want to make it clear that pretty much any sunscreen is better than no sunscreen, so don't feel like you need to delay your next workout until you have sourced the perfect product. (And no, there are no health concerns about sunscreen that outweigh the very well-documented risks of getting too much sun exposure. Lifehacker's Stephen Johnson has an explainer on that h...

Summer weather can be fun for a little bit—I love a 90-degree day to make a cold swimming pool feel refreshing—but a lot of us are seeing serious heat advisories lately. When the temperature and humidity are high enough, the weather can be genuinely dangerous. Here’s what you should know about staying cool and staying safe. What is an excessive heat warning? First, let’s talk about the difference between a “warning” and a watch or outlook. A warning is the most serious of the three. As the Normal Fire Department famously explained with a taco analogy, a taco watch means that we have the ingredients to make tacos. A taco warning means you better get ready because we are having tacos right now. Here’s how the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration describes these three levels: An exc...

While your mobile device has a lot of built-in features to keep your data secure and protect your privacy, it may still be vulnerable to snooping if someone you know has access to your accounts or manages to install hidden apps—known as stalkerware—that track your every move. These malicious programs may exploit built-in features and permissions on your iPhone or Android to spy on you. Here's how to identify and remove stalkerware from your device. What is stalkerware?Stalkerware is a form of spyware used to surveil and monitor activity on your device, such as messages, photos, and real-time location, without your consent. Stalkerware is most often found in the form of an app downloaded directly onto your device and may be hidden from your home screen or disguised as something innocent so ...
