Birdwatching collective Flock Together, founded in London by friends Nadeem Perera (who has since moved to Bristol) and Ollie Olanipekun, was initially a way to get the POC community out into nature — challenging the underrepresentation in that space. But now, what started as a handful of 15 people will regularly be 300 strong. “We’ve engaged a massive audience,” says Perera. “So now, how can we bring our energy, our ideas, our cultural creativity into this natural history, outdoor space? Touches of the original exposed brick are brought up-to-date by a clever use of colour — slate, rich teal, orange, bright yellow. And ,of course, the sauna. The feel is characterful, cosy and authentic, no doubt helped by the hotel — which opened in October 2020 — having independent Finnish owners, rather than pretending to be all those things while being part of a giant international group. The house is called Il Bacio, Italian for The Kiss, which I can’t help but like, and as you turn down its driveway it welcomes you like a stone-clad ship sat at dock. Spread over two floors and holding five sprawling bedrooms with their own bathrooms, it even has its own courtyard and library. The old wooden olive press from its 19th century farmhouse days stands by what is now the dining room. The ancient hearth, dating back to the 15th century, remains as much the centre of the household as it was when all living there had to gather round it for cooking and heat. Source link

Even growing up in a city as multicultural as London, mainstream hair salons have, for the most part, been ill-equipped to deal with textured hair. As a result, the few black hair salons that do exist are often vastly oversubscribed. According to one survey, the UK has just 314 afro hair salons out of almost 45,000 registered hair and beauty salons. The options are extremely limited, and when the supply doesn’t match the demand, customer experience can suffer. Every black woman I know has a horror story about multiple hour-long wait times and less than optimal service, to put it mildly. This is the first city opening in the US from Aman, the lifestyle brand associated with super smart spas, exceptional service and no detail spared in design or craft. Now, it has managed to take the crown for the most expensive hotel in Manhattan, a bold move, but it has been pulled off with charm. There’s no sweeping lobby here, rather, an atmospherically lit entrance with two elevators that take you high up to the 14th floor. Staff seem to slip out from every hallway, there to help point you to your room, the inanely slick spa or high-tech gym (helpful as the signage is slightly lack and it can be hard to know where to go).
