British Library cyber attack explained — and its devastating consequences

For now, while there are students brushing up for exams in the halls, academics across the UK who want the BL's core services are struggling. Writer Dr Dick McCaw, a reader in performance practices at Royal Holloway University, has been using the library for decades, and written six books here. “I’m starting to do my research for the next book. And to be honest with you, I have no idea how I’m going to get hold of this stuff,” he says. Dr Catherine Bateson, a history lecturer at the University of Kent, says she’s may have to change her undergraduate course because some resources aren't available, and mourns the loss of research scholarships for young academics. Phoebe Day, 25, is doing an art history PhD, and says while her work has been delayed, it's not as bad as some of her friends who ...

Post office scandal: ‘when they led me to my prison cell it felt like I’d died’

Despite all of these traumas, we're just glad that this story has finally managed to break through thanks to ITV, albeit too late for many. Until this the four-part drama aired last week it was in the news here and there, but it never broken through, because there was Brexit, then the elections, then Covid... I did finally speak to my local MP Bambos Charalambous, MP for Enfield Southgate, after my conviction was overturned. I ended up in tears just trying to tell him what had happened. He's been very supportive, reaching out just a couple of days ago to ask how he can help us further. But until this week, it felt like most members of the public didn't care, despite it being described as the biggest miscarriage of justice in British history. It was meant to be such a serious thing yet nobo...

Dry January: A day-by-day account of how it’s transforming your health

While your health won't magically transform overnight, giving up alcohol for the month (and who knows, you might even surprise yourself by continuing on the alcohol-free path), can trigger a string of beneficial changes. “Starting with 30 days abstinence will allow your body to reset and from that place, you can set your own boundaries going forward,” continues Lee Grace. But what you're probably most intrigued about, is what's happens inside your body after taking that last sip. Source link

The eco top 12: your year of sustainable travel

Chris Wright, managing director of Sunvil Group, gives Girona the green light for nature, history and gastronomy. “Spain is on an impressive sustainability journey with an ever-growing list of adopters, educators, and visionaries. Girona is a delight to visit any time of year, but in March, you will discover this Catalonian city without the crowds and in the early bloom of spring. Travel by train from London via Madrid in nine hours, then allow yourself to get lost in Girona’s maze of medieval alleys. Marvel at the 11th-century cathedral, tour the storied Arab Baths, walk atop the city wall, hire a bike and explore the medieval lanes and surrounding greenways.” Source link

Mustique — the luxury island paradise where Kate Moss will celebrate her 50th birthday

The most talked-about villa on the island (there are only a hundred or so, most of which are available to rent — including Bryan Adams’s and Tommy Hilfiger’s, although not Sir Mick Jagger’s) is The Terraces, a gigantic home that is being made available to rent for the first time (it’s for sale, too, if you’ve got a spare $200 million). It overlooks its own 17-acre plot with a floodlit tennis court, hand-painted Venetian-style fresco ceilings throughout, nine vast bedroom suites, a home cinema (obviously) and a staff of 18 as well as an entirely separate Miami-style entertainment building. The cost? Well, it’s £150,000 per week, and for that you still have to buy your own Whispering Angel. It is beautiful though. Big, but beautiful. Source link

Bob, be gone: why I’m embracing the return of super-long hair for 2024

This mania for long hair is hardly a new thing for me. Growing up, I developed a fixation with the film Splash and promptly decided as a grown up that I would like hair so long that I could forgo a bikini top (yes, I was an odd child). I almost achieved this goal at school – until, to my horror, I had to chop it all off after an incident with an excess of bleach about which I would rather not speak. Since then, my hair never made it far past my collarbone again. Source link

10 of the best trips for solo travel

In short, people are now travelling solo not because they have to – but because they want to. Emboldened with a ‘now or never’ attitude post-pandemic and more confident than ever about spending time solitary, travellers are busy booking their dream trips, regardless of life stage or relationship status. Many tour operators have noticed the trend: Scott Dunn reported a 30 per cent increase in solo bookings in 2023, while Black Tomato saw them almost double. In response to demand, many operators have launched solo travel collections or solo-specific departure dates, while others are waiving pricey single supplements. Source link

The one thing that’s worse than people banging on about Dry January…

So saying yes to a glass of wine at dinner which will, undetected, not be drunk or subsequently filled up. Buying drinks that look like an actual drink – tonic water – at the pub (which means buying the first round, but there you go). Clasping a stunt cocktail at a party while one flits from conversation to conversation to avoid detection. And there are only two rules. One: you are not allowed to stay in, ever. And two, if anyone rumbles you then you have failed. In this sense, I suppose, it is more a game than it is a wellness practice which is hugely preferable because drinking games are much more fun than wellness practices. Source link
