Our first evening was spent in the hotels main restaurant, Apnea, which translates to ‘breathless’ and the al fresco views of the Aegean sea as you tuck into the modern Greek cuisine certainly take your breath away. Local fresh seafood dishes are the head chefs speciality and we enjoyed fresh Cretan cherry tomatoes with carob rusks and sea fennel, grilled Scorpion Fish with kakkavia sauce and fennel, milk-fed lamb with fermented grains, eggplant and grape leaf, all washed down with a local cocktail created by the restaurants’ mixologist. En route, I tried to pick up a cereal bar. Very hot water. Nature Valley, Nakd and even, ironically, Eat Natural, are all UPFs, despite looking good for you. I have learnt many products are dressed up in this faux-harmless drag. The saviour on the bar front is Deliciously Ella, whose offering is group three, and are the result of Ella Woodward’s research into nutrition after she was diagnosed with Postural Tachycardia Syndrome in 2012. However, while they may not be an UPF, they do have a nutri-score of E, the worst, due to high sugar and saturated fats. They are tasty, though.
