Ask Susan: Should I change my KiwiSaver fund?

Photo: RNZ Got a question about personal finance or the economy? Email it to susan.edmunds@rnz.co.nz My older sister has been telling me to switch to her Simplicity high-growth KiwiSaver. She says the returns are excellent because it's an index fund with low fees. I'm not a fan of the build-to-rent aspect of Simplicity - it seems risky to me - and I'm not sure how this fits in to their KiwiSaver scheme. My KiwiSaver is a growth fund with the ANZ Bank. I feel like it's safer having my KiwiSaver with a bank rather than a newcomer like Simplicity. But I agree with her that the lower fees are tempting, and I like the sound of an index fund. Simplicity is a lower-fee option for KiwiSaver, with a passive investment structure that means that it largely mirrors the performance of markets rather...

‘The ick’ and ‘boop’ latest words added to Cambridge Dictionary

The Cambridge Dictionary defines "boop" as "a gentle hit or touch" on the nose or head as a joke or to indicate affection. Photo: 123rf By Lucy Clarke-Billings, BBC News "The ick" and "boop" are among more than 3200 new words and phrases added to the Cambridge Dictionary this year. The latest additions - which have gained prominence in online and youth culture in recent years - are expected to be more than a fleeting part of the English language. Wendalyn Nichols, Cambridge Dictionary's publishing manager, said that while language is constantly evolving, these new additions have "staying power". The dictionary defines "the ick", popularised by the reality show Love Island, as "a sudden feeling that you dislike someone or something or are no longer attracted to someone because of somethi...

Here’s what it takes to open an eatery in a cost of living crisis

There's no perfect time to open a restaurant, the owner of new Māngere Bridge cafe The Gaff says. Photo: RNZ/Nick Monro The restaurant business is a notoriously high risk venture. Mix that with the worst recession in 15 years and you'd think you have a recipe for disaster. But there are plenty of food businesses showing that you can overcome tough economic times. RNZ speaks to four owners who said bugger the recession, and opened their doors anyway. San Ray now occupies the historic building that once housed Orphan's Kitchen. Barack and Michelle Obama endorse Kamala Harris for president

By Ana Faguy and Bernd Debusmann Jr at the White House, BBC News, Washington Barack Obama and Kamala Harris have known each other for decades. Photo: Getty Images/Chip Somodevilla Barack Obama has endorsed Vice-President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic presidential nominee, ending days of speculation over whether he would support her. Former President Obama and ex-First Lady Michelle Obama said in a joint statement that they believe Harris has the "vision, the character, and the strength that this critical moment demands". Mr Obama was reportedly among more than 100 prominent Democrats Harris spoke to after President Joe Biden announced last Sunday he was dropping out of the race. In a statement at the time, Obama praised Biden's exit, but stopped short of endorsing Harris. The US...

Why do the Dutch tower over their neighbours?

Photo: AFP There is one country that constantly produces the tallest people in the world - so what is their secret? Like in the rest of Europe and Western nations, heights in the Netherlands have increased dramatically over the past 200 years - but for some reason, the Dutch grow higher. The Dutch started shooting up in the late 19th century, Kristina Thompson, an associate professor of health and society at Wageningen University, told RNZ's Nights. "At the beginning of the 19th century, the Dutch were relatively short - they were around 163-165 centimetres for men. And we really start to see a massive shift towards the middle of the 19th century when the Dutch start growing at this tremendous rate. "And it was only really in the 20th century that the Dutch outstripped other nations and ...

Yes to overseeing, no to overstepping

Last November, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) had published the draft Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill. One of its proposed changes was bringing over-the-top (OTT) platforms and user-generated content under its ambit. The bill was slated to be presented at the new parliament’s inaugural session. While that did not happen, the draft bill has been put on hold. Sources from MIB tell us that the two primary points of contention are its suggestion to establish a Broadcast Advisory Council (BAC), and the requirement to adhere to the Cinematograph Act of 1952 while self-censoring OTT content.    Currently, each show is run past the streamer’s self-evaluation committee and legal team  Over the past three years, self-censorship has become the norm, with each streamer ha...

It urged all travellers to postpone their journeys. Repairs were underway but traffi...
