Carney is set to announce immigration plan. Where do levels stand now? – National

Canada’s new immigration plan will be in focus as the federal government prepares to table its budget next week, with Prime Minister Mark Carney saying a new plan will be part of that. Speaking to students at the University of Ottawa last week, Carney said “this budget will include Canada’s new immigration plan to do better for newcomers and for everyone.”Each year, the government announces the number of permanent residents it plans to bring in over the next few years. Last year, the government also started setting targets for temporary immigration.“This government is getting immigration under control, with asylum claims down by a third, and even temporary foreign workers down by more than 70 per cent this year,” Carney said.“To match immigration levels with our needs and our capacity to w...

Ontario sets date to remove speed cameras, temporary signs to be installed

The Ford government’s automated speed enforcement legislation will become law just two weeks after it was first introduced, compelling municipalities to remove speed cameras before roundabouts, speed bumps and flashing lights have been installed. Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria said an omnibus red tape bill, which includes the speed camera ban, will receive royal assent next Monday, with municipalities then required to remove the cameras by Nov. 14.He said the provincial government would pay for — and provide — temporary signs for cities to put up when the cameras are removed and would eventually help to install infrastructure changes.“Ultimately, we’ll have temporary signage, larger signage that will be installed before the 14th in all of the municipal speed camera-impacted zone...

Personal bias, blind belief driving vaccine-autism link, say experts

Personal bias and blind belief are time and again reigniting the claim that childhood vaccines are increasing the risk of autism -- a neurological condition, said health experts on Wednesday.  Recently, a self-published report by the US-based McCullough Foundation claimed that vaccination is “the most significant preventable driver” of autism. The report, not being peer-reviewed, has garnered significant attention from many anti-vaccine campaigners, including Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu. “There are many people who take an anti-vaccine stand. We saw the damaging effects of their propaganda during the early part of the pandemic -- when tens of thousands of people died of severe Covid-19 simply because they were afraid to vaccinate,” Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan of the Indian Medical Association, K...

U.S. Senate passes non-binding vote against Trump’s tariffs on Canada – National

The U.S. Senate passed legislation Wednesday that would nullify U.S. tariffs on Canada, just as U.S. President Donald Trump is engaged in trade talks in Asia as well as an increasingly bitter trade spat with U.S.’s northern neighbor that is one of its largest economic partners. The 50-46 tally was the latest in a series of votes this week to terminate the national emergencies that Trump has used to impose tariffs. While the resolutions won’t ultimately take effect, they have proven to be an effective way for Democrats to expose cracks between the president’s trade policy and Republican senators who have traditionally supported free trade arguments. 2:08 Doug Ford calls out U.S. envoy for ‘unacce...

Try ‘Habit Stacking’ to Make New Routines Stick

We may earn a commission from links on this page. Why is it so easy to form bad habits and so frustrating to try to form good ones? We crave routine, at least to some degree, so it's frustrating when you can't make productive or helpful habits stick. But consider that you already have a bunch of good, small habits, like putting the coffee on in the morning or washing your face before bed. As hard as you might be struggling with the bigger ones, you know you can do it because you've done it countless times before in smaller ways. In fact, those smaller routines can do more than prove your capability when it comes to building them; they can help you entrench larger habits and be even more productive. Let's go over a technique called habit stacking, which is basically li...

Culture at heart of Blue Jays’ World Series run

TORONTO – Whether it was at the draft, the trade deadline, or during free agency, Ross Atkins has always emphasized the importance of values during his decade as general manager of the Toronto Blue Jays. Every time there was a potential addition to the team, Atkins never failed to mention their “high character.”He believes that policy has paid off in 2025, with the Blue Jays reaching the World Series for the first time in 32 years in large part thanks to their cohesiveness and dedication to each other.“I’ve always been taught and learned and believed strongly that hiring and identification of — whether it be players, coaches, scouts, anyone that’s helping support the organization — that hiring’s the most important thing we do,” said Atkins during a news conference on Friday before Game 1 o...
