ASIO lifts terror threat level to ‘probable’ amid heightened tensions over war in Gaza

(File image). Photo: 123RF Australia's official terror alert level has been raised to "probable" amid heightened community tensions over the war in Gaza. Security authorities believe the chances of a violent extremist act are now more likely than when authorities lowered the alert level to "possible" in November 2022. ASIO's director-general Mike Burgess said Australia's security environment had become more volatile and unpredictable. "More Australians are being radicalised and being radicalised more quickly," Burgess said. "More Australians are willing to use violence to advance their cause. Politically motivated violence now joins espionage and foreign interference as our principal security concerns." He also noted the conflict in Gaza was not the "cause" for raising the terror level,...

Rising obesity in kids in India can lead to poor health later: Experts

Childhood obesity is one of the leading and steadily increasing health concerns, experts said on Sunday.  With a large segment of the population falling in the younger age group, childhood obesity is a growing concern that could lead to significant health problems in adulthood. Addressing the rising issue of childhood obesity in India, experts emphasise the long-term health risks associated with it and the need for early intervention. Initiatives like school-based education and healthy meal programs are crucial in managing and preventing obesity. Lifestyle changes remain the primary tool so that adulthood risks can be managed, with bariatric surgery remaining an option for more serious/specific cases. "Childhood obesity is a significant problem in our country, given our large young popu...

How a $920 fridge created a $10k ‘debt spiral’

An EFTPOS card being swiped at a terminal. Photo: 123RF A case in which a woman ended up with $10,000 debt after buying a $920 fridge has sparked a warning from the Insurance and Financial Services Ombudsman Scheme (IFSO) - and a refund to the borrower. The case was recently investigated by the scheme, which does not identify the people who complain nor the providers they complain about. The woman had needed a new fridge, and found one that cost $920. The shop offered her a credit card to purchase it, with an available credit balance of $6000. She then used the card to buy other things and ended up struggling with the repayments, so the card provider recommended she take a personal loan to pay it off. But the woman then had to give up her job because of medical issues, which put her int...

Misinformation driving anti-immigration violence across Britain

A protester holding a piece of concrete walks towards riot police as clashes erupt in Bristol on 3 August 3, 2024. Photo: JUSTIN TALLIS / AFP Anti-immigration protesters broke hotel windows and set bins on fire in northern England on Sunday in the latest wave of unrest that has presented a major test to new Prime Minister Keir Starmer's government. Violent protests involving hundreds of anti-immigration protesters have erupted in towns and cities across Britain after three girls were killed in a knife attack at a children's dance class in Southport in northwest England last week. The murders were seized on by anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim groups as misinformation spread that the suspected attacker was an immigrant and a radical Islamist. Police have said the suspect was born in Britain...

Harry and Meghan discuss ‘protecting’ their children

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in an interview with CBS News Sunday Morning. Photo: CBS News By Noor Nanji of the BBC The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have discussed the online threats facing children in their first formal broadcast interview since their conversation with Oprah Winfrey three years ago. Speaking on CBS News Sunday Morning, the couple drew on their own experience as parents, saying all they wanted to do was "protect" their son Archie and daughter Lilibet. Prince Harry added that "one of the scariest things" was knowing that any parent could lose a child to suicide as a result of exposure to harmful content. The pair recently launched a new programme called The Parents Network, which aims to support parents and guardians who have been affected by the issue. In their intervie...

Official cash rate tipped to hit 5 percent by year’s end

The Reserve Bank. Photo: RNZ / Samuel Rillstone The official cash rate (OCR) is likely to drop to 5 percent by the end of the year, Westpac economists say. The bank has updated its OCR forecast, and now expects a drop in October and November. Chief economist Kelly Eckhold said while it had brought forward its prediction by a month, it had made relatively few changes to the rest of its forecast. "We see 25bps (basis points) cuts in October and November and another in February next year, then we see the next one in the May monetary policy statement. We still get the OCR at 4.5 percent in May next year, which is what we've previously said." He said the bank had revised down its short-term economic growth forecasts "reasonably significantly". It expects the economy to have shrunk in the sec...

`Barzakh` review: When grief meets supernatural splendour

BarzakhOn: Zindagi YouTube Channel and ZEE5Dir: Asim AbbasiCast: Fawad Khan, Sanam Saeed, Salman Shahid, Fawad M KhanRating: ***1/2 Why do we so often find ourselves drawn to dysfunctional family stories? Be it Shakun Batra’s Kapoor & Sons (2016), Christopher Storer’s The Bear (2022-2024), Coco Mellors’ new novel Blue Sisters, or Asim Abbasi’s sumptuous new offering Barzakh—why does losing yourself in the messiness of others’ family drama feel so soothing to us? I found myself answering this diabolical question while watching the fourth episode of Barzakh. Shehreyar (Fawad Khan) unexpectedly lashes out at his father at a family dinner and calls him an ‘asshole’. I had my answer right there—there is something cathartic about watching characters say things to their loved ones that you’v...

Job market cools, unemployment expected to rise further – economists

The power balance is tilting further towards employers, with the growth in labour costs cooling along with the job market, ASB senior economist Mark Smith says. File photo Photo: RNZ The unemployment rate is expected to rise to a near four-year high as demand for workers cools while the economy struggles under the weight of high interest rates. Economists expect data due on Wednesday will show a rise in annual unemployment to 4.7 percent in the June quarter, up from 4.3 percent in March - the highest since the end of 2020. Westpac senior economist Michael Gordon said the labour market is "clearly softening", something the Reserve Bank (RBNZ) wants to see. "The rise in unemployment from its lows was gradual at first, but has picked up the pace in recent quarters," he said. The labour sho...

At least 73 killed as clashes rock Bangladesh, curfew imposed

By Ruma Paul for Reuters Protesters block the Shahbagh intersection during a protest in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Photo: AFP / Ahmed Salahuddin At least 73 people were killed and hundreds injured in clashes in Bangladesh on Sunday, as police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse tens of thousands of protesters calling for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign. The government declared an indefinite nationwide curfew starting at 6pm local time on Sunday, the first time it has taken such a step during the current protests that began last month. It also announced a three-day general holiday starting from Monday. The unrest, which has prompted the government to shut down internet services, is Hasina's biggest test in her 20-year regime after she won a fourth straight term in elections t...
