The Kiwi brain behind the Paris Olympic’s medal per capita tally

Medals Per Capita website has New Zealand has fourth Photo: medalspercapital.com The man behind a website tallying Olympic medals per capita, conveniently vaulting New Zealand to one of the top nations, is, not surprisingly a Kiwi. Medals Per Capita is a website set up by New Zealand computer scientist Craig Nevill-Manning revealing the truth - that New Zealand is a far more decorated nation for Olympic medals than heavy hitters like the US, China and - and YES - Australia. New Zealand came fourth on the per capita medal tally in Paris behind the even tinier island nations of Grenada, Dominica and Saint Lucia. At position nine, Australia barely makes the top 10. The US is at 47 and China, with its massive billion-plus population, is all the way down at 75. "It is my little contribution ...

Gyaarah Gyaarah Web Review: Go for gyaarah

Gyaarah GyaarahOn: ZEE5Dir: Umesh BistCast: Raghav Juyal, Kritika Kamra Rating: 3/5 If someone who’s never visited India, let alone small-town India, got gifted an exhaustive playlist of shows and movies set in our locations—they should be permitted to believe this is a seriously cold country.  Literally, all series, movies, particularly to do with Tier II towns, are set in the winters. To the extent that film industry folks must’ve noticed, it’s hard to find cast, crew in Bombay, October onwards.  They’re all in jackets, boots, hoodies and cravats, shooting in the North, the likes of Dehradun, Mussoorie. As with the first season of Gyaarah Gyaarah.  On which the wintry set-up appears all the more apt, since this police procedural is set in the ‘cold cases’ department of the local cop ...

Seafood industry not making most of free trade deals

Hoki fish. Photo: jackf/123RF The deputy secretary of trade says the seafood industry is not making the most of free trade deals. Vangelis Vitalis said FTAs with the UK and European Union and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) eliminated tariffs on some seafood - giving New Zealand an advantage over other countries. However at the recent Seafood Conference, he told the industry the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has crunched some numbers - which show seafood exporters are not making the most of them. "You're exporting mussels to Mexico and paying a 20 percent tariff that means for every $100 of exports you're giving $20 to the Mexican customs administration, but the CPTPP which came into force five years ago eliminated that tariff, y...
