Watch: Kamala Harris delivers pivotal Democratic convention speech

After a whirlwind month in American politics, new Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris has formally reintroduced herself in a highly anticipated speech on the final day of the convention in Chicago. US Vice President Harris, 59, is the first Black woman and South Asian woman to ever be a party's presidential nominee. Just a few months ago, such a scene would have been unthinkable, but after Biden had a dismal debate performance in late June he ended up withdrawing as a candidate last month, and Democrats quickly lined up to endorse Harris. She will face former president, Republican Donald Trump, in the 5 November election in a match quite unlike any in recent American history. Follow our liveblog of the speech here: Source link

Photo: Derek Morrison Replacing sheep and beef farms with pine forests would reduce emissions and improve water quality, but it will come at a cost to local communities according to Federated Farmers. Rivers and lakes could be cleaned up with profits still generated for landowners by converting sheep and beef farms to pine trees, according to a new paper from the Our Land and Water science challenge. Federated Farmers meat and wool chair Toby Williams told Morning Report pine trees were an important part of the regional economy, as well as on-farm, but planting whole farms with pine trees could have flow-on impacts in regional towns. Pamu registers $26m full-year loss

File pic Photo: RNZ / Nate McKinnon State-owned farming company Pāmu has recorded a full-year loss of $26 million due to falling livestock prices, high interest rates and the ongoing costs related to Cyclone Gabrielle. The company, formerly known as Landcorp Farming, manages 112 dairy, deer and sheep farms across more than 360,000 hectares of farmland nationwide. The loss for the 12 months to the end of June compared to a $9m loss the year before. Revenue dropped 2.8 percent to $282m - with livestock revenue down $4m on the prior year to $103m, reflecting softer livestock pricing. That's while it faced an extra $3m in interest costs on last year. Despite a 3 percent increase in milk solids, milk revenue remained flat at $120m due to the lower farm gate milk price. It's not clear how the...
