US election: Trump says he will vote against Florida amendment enshrining abortion rights

Donald Trump. Photo: Spencer Platt / Getty Images / AFP Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump says he will vote against an amendment in his home state of Florida that would enshrine abortion rights in the state's constitution and overturn a current six-week abortion ban. Trump made the comments to Fox News, a day after he caused confusion when he seemed to suggest in an interview with NBC News that he would vote in favour of the amendment. The amendment was strongly opposed by the anti-abortion groups that have backed his campaign in the 5 November election against Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris. "I think six weeks, you need more time than six weeks," Trump said, adding he also believed the proposed amendment was too permissive. "So I'll be voting no for that reason," ...

What would K3G`s Rohan and Poo`s daughter look like? Karan Johar REVEALS

Producer-director Karan Johar on Tuesday said it`s been 23 years since "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham" released and if two of its characters, Rohan Raichand and Pooja Sharma, had a baby girl, she would be Bae from the upcoming series "Call Me Bae". Johar, who serves as an executive producer on the Prime Video show, said the character of Bae -- played by Ananya Panday in her series debut -- is a "glorious Gen Z 2.0 derivative" of Kareena Kapoor Khan`s iconic fashionista Poo aka Pooja from his 2001 feature film. "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham" ends with Poo and Rohan, essayed by Hrithik Roshan, tying the knot. "If Rohan and Pooja now would have had to have had a baby girl, she would be Bae. I`m just talking because she really is a glorious Gen Z 2.0 derivative of Poo. It`s like where Poo ends, Bae t...

Ask Susan: Can a solo mum buy a house?

RNZ's money correspondent Susan Edmunds. Photo: RNZ Do you have a burning money question you want answered? Email susan.edmunds@rnz.co.nz Could my 30-year-old daughter, a solo mum of three, possibly qualify for a home loan? Her income is $800 a week and she works four days. I would give her $25,000 for a deposit. She has no KiwiSaver. I took your numbers to mortgage broker Glen Mcleod to have a look at what might be possible. In general, what matters when it comes to buying a house is having enough of a deposit to qualify for a loan, and enough income to service it. Your daughter may be able to access a First Home Loan that would lend 95 percent of the purchase price of her home. In that sense, a $25,000 deposit could allow her to buy a house worth $500,000. But the key question here i...

Wellington cafe suffers ‘worst sales day ever’ as public sector job cuts bite

The Hangar has had to increase its coffee prices by 30c a cup. (File image) Photo: LUIS ROBAYO The hospitality crunch is worse than it has ever been, cafe owners say, as job cuts and the cost of living bite. Kris Bartley, the owner of Sweet Release cafe in Wellington, said she had the worst day of sales in her 10 years in business this week. "People just don't have money. People who do are saving their money in case they lose their jobs, which is totally fair." Read more: Her customers were usually working professionals and students, but public sector job cuts had hit hard, and some customers had also expressed concerns about safety in Manners Street where the cafe was situated, she said. Fewer people than ever were coming into the store and it was harder than during Covid. "During Cov...

Managing abortion at home using pills is safe, may ease hospital burden: Lancet

Managing abortion at home using pills is safe and may ease hospital burden, claimed a study published in The Lancet journal on Friday.  The randomised controlled trial of 435 women by Swedish researchers analysed women who took the first dose of misoprostol (a pill given as part of the procedure for medical abortions) at home or in the hospital. Those who took the pill at home had a 71 per cent chance of completing their care in hospital within 9 hours with no overnight stay, compared to 46 per cent of women who took the first dose of misoprostol at the hospital. Women in hospital settings are more likely to find abortion "stressful and isolating", compared to those at home. In a medical abortion (also known as abortion with pills) women are typically prescribed two types of pills. Mi...

Easy train journeys in Europe — and the chicest places to stay

Maybe it was an early obsession with The Railway Children, or the simple joy of shortbread dunked into mediocre tea from a creaking trolley as sun-doused fields roll by, but train travel, for me, has always felt thrilling — if not a little poetic. Great swathes of countryside flash past you like paintings. Soft, civilised rituals (the shortbread ilk) are encased and protected, while below, the steel grates violently and the train whips through towns and villages like a bullet. Unless, of course, you’ve had the privilege of stepping on board South Western Rail (pulled by a mule, no bottled water for hours, loos nearly always revolting). In fact, most British commuters reading this will scoff at any form of locomotive sweet talk. But for a weekend away, when you consider the airport malarkey...

Dunedin cobbler seeks owners of unclaimed shoes before he shuts up shop

The Country Cobbler in the Dunedin suburb of Mornington is set to close unless Greg Fox can find a buyer for the shop (file picture). Photo: 123RF A Dunedin cobbler is counting down the days to when he hangs up his tools one last time. Greg Fox has been repairing shoes, bags, belts and even motorcycle leathers at Country Cobbler in Dunedin's Mornington for the past 25 years. He has been looking for a buyer for his business and also hoping the owners of the mountain of unclaimed shoes make it back to collect them in time before his door closes. "The plan is if I can't sell it I'll just pack up and take everything home with me, and that's the sort of finish really of the Country Cobbler." Fox said he was closing the business because he was 67 and wanted to retire to spend more time with h...

75 pc corneal blindness cases untreated in India due to lack of eye donors

A whopping 75 per cent of corneal blindness cases in India are untreated due to lack of eye donors, said an expert on Thursday.  Corneal blindness is the second leading cause of visual impairment in India with a current burden of 1.1 million people. However, only 25,000 out of these requirements are met each year. “This makes it feasible for only one out of every four individuals with corneal blindness to avail of the required surgery, while 75 per cent of the cases are left untreated,” said the ophthalmologist at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad. A growing ageing population, higher incidence of corneal infections and injuries are some of the reasons why corneal blindness is rising in India. “Vitamin-A deficiency in children, degenerative conditions like keratoconus and corneal dystrophies,...
