Surging markets push Superannuation Fund to new high

Sharemarket returns were boosted by holdings in the so-called 'magnificent seven' technology stocks, including Microsoft, Amazon, Tesla and Nvidia. Photo: 123RF The value of the NZ Superannuation Fund has hit a record high of $76.6 billion on the back of a strong performance by overseas technology stocks. The fund earned $11.2b for the year ended June, a 14.9 percent rise on the previous year, as sharemarkets were driven higher by improving economic factors and surging overseas sharemarkets. "Declining inflation, positive macroeconomic data and optimism that generative AI technology will boost corporate profitability saw global markets perform exceptionally well," chief executive Jo Townsend said. She said the fund's active investment strategies, which included commitments to real estat...

Prolonged poor gut health, constipation and nausea may signal Parkinson`s

People suffering from poor gut health with constipation and nausea for a long period may signal the risk of developing Parkinson`s disease, according to a study that shows the neurological disorder may begin in the gut and not the brain.  Parkinson`s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder. It affects an estimated 8.5 million people worldwide; and is majorly characterised by tremors, stiffness, and loss of balance. The study, published in the journal Cerebral Cortex, found that a history of damage to the lining of the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract has a 76 per cent higher chance of developing Parkinson`s. Trisha S. Pasricha, a neurogastroenterologist at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in the US noted that science is yet to completely unravel how the gut ...

If you pay $750 in rent, why can’t you get a mortgage for that amount?

Generally areas with the lowest house prices have the smallest jump from average rent to mortgage payments. Photo: Unsplash / Blake Wheeler It's a common complaint from first-home buyers: If I can pay $750 a week in rent - and have been doing it every week for years - why is that not enough to prove to the bank that I can afford a mortgage at that repayment level? Unfortunately, it's not that simple. A repayment of $750 a week would service a $540,000 loan with a 6 percent interest rate. A household with two borrowers and two children under 18 would need an income of about $115,000 a year to qualify for that, depending on their expenses. Read more: Data shows that it is generally the areas with the lowest house prices that have the smallest jump from average rent to mortgage payments. ...

NZ’s role in helping shape international politicians, doctors and teachers

Aiming to block communism's spread and foster increased living standards in developing countries, New Zealand provided Colombo Plan university scholarships to Malaysian high school graduates in the 1960s and 70s. Hashim Yaacob wasn't sure what to expect when he first came to New Zealand. "I was quite unsure what I was going into… I had never met any white people before. I came from a very poor background," he said. "But New Zealanders, they were very friendly, beyond my expectations." Yaacob grew up without electricity or running water in Kelantan, the Malaysian state neighbouring Thailand. But Malaysia needed dentists, so to Otago's dentis...

St Leonards foodie guide: the best restaurants, bars and things to do

After breakfast, we walked to Hastings by meandering through Alexandra Park, a 109-acre green sprawl of ancient trees, a cafe, tennis courts and ponds, which took us almost all the way. Like many coastal towns, rows of colourfully painted houses charm before you spot the inevitable, but useful, pound shops. Parallel to the seafront, George Street is a pedestrianised part of Hastings Old Town, lined with independent book shops, tattoo parlours, vintage clothes shops and bars. Just past it, Hastings Contemporary is a low-level new build with a gallery space currently devoted to Ethiopian artist Elias Sime, whose pieces include delicate mosaics which turn out to be ingeniously repurposed computer keyboards. There’s a glass-walled cafe with views over the fishermen’s huts and pebbled beach, bu...

What to watch for at the Harris-Trump presidential debate

By James Oliphant, Reuters US vice president and 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris and former US president and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. Photo: AFP Analysis - Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump will battle each other this week in their first televised debate, a high-stakes clash that could give the winner an advantage in the final sprint to election day. For Harris, the square-off in Philadelphia on Wednesday is an opportunity to lay out her priorities and show her mettle against a rival who has belittled her intelligence and subjected her to racist and sexist attacks. Trump will get a chance to try and blunt some of Harris' momentum in a race that has tightened considerably since she became the Democratic nominee in July. Most...
