Commercial garlic grower accused of spreading misinformation, bullying and racially attacking smaller domestic producers

Photo: RNZ/Carol Stiles A commercial Hawke's Bay garlic grower has been accused of a social media smear campaign, misinformation and bullying and racially attacking smaller domestic producers to discredit them online. The squabble has predominantly played out on the garlic gurus NZ Facebook page, centred around debate over claims of an allium white rot (AWR) outbreak and which landowners are responsible for the fungal disease. Te Mata Garlic's Chris Morrison is facing allegations of scaremongering by falsely claiming to have been tasked by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) and other industry bodies to compile data on growers as part of an "industry investigation". MPI has denied investigating an AWR outbreak. Morrison also left a comment on an international 150,000-member garli...

Fletcher Building goes into trading halt ahead of Australian leaky pipes announcement

Photo: supplied Fletcher Building is in a trading halt ahead of a government announcement, later on Friday, about leaky pipes in Western Australian homes, manufactured by its Iplex subsidiary. Fletcher had been in mediation with stakeholders, including the Government of Western Australia, as part of a joint industry response to the leaky pipe issue. Perth-based building firm BGC blamed Iplex for the bursting and leaking pipes, but Fletcher said installation was the problem. Fletcher said Friday's announcement would include material information in respect of its shares. "This announcement is expected to outline whether the Government of Western Australia will accept a joint industry response to this issue," Fletcher said in a statement to the market. The trading halt would remain in place...

Bucket hats boom as Oasis takes fashion back to Britpop Britain

Oasis are back on, but do you have your bucket hat at the ready?Fashion’s (at times tiresome) obsession with nineties-cum-noughties style has ensured Liam Gallagher’s headpiece of choice has never gone too far out of the mainstream. Any festival-goers this summer — be it Glastonbury, All Points East or, even, the local beer fair — will have borne witness to a flood of Carhartt navy blue and PrettyLittleThing candy floss faux fur iterations. And for better or worse, more are set to come. Lennon Gallagher follows in his father’s footsteps in a Barbour bucket hat at Glastonbury Jed Cullen/Dave BenettThe style – which originated as the humble Irish walking hat in the early 1900s before evolving into military wear, a fashion statement in the Sixties and Seventies, and, later, a solidifying st...

Psoriasis is more likely to affect men, say experts

It is worth noting that men are twice as likely as women to develop psoriasis, experts said on Wednesday. Each year, August is celebrated as Psoriasis Awareness Month. Psoriasis is an autoimmune skin disorder causing thick, red, scaly patches on the elbows, knees, lower back, and scalp.  It is influenced by environmental and genetic factors, with men more affected due to hormonal variations, genetic predispositions, and lifestyle choices. Symptoms include itchy or burning feelings, swollen nails, dry, cracked skin, and red areas covered in silvery scales. While there is no cure, medications and lifestyle changes can help manage the condition and prevent problems. "Psoriasis is a long-term skin disorder marked by thick, red, scaly skin patches caused by a fast buildup of skin cells. The ...

New Mpox strain poses notable risk for children, warn experts

The new and deadlier Mpox strain -- Clade 1b -- poses a notable risk to children, said experts on Thursday, amid an outbreak of the infectious disease in Africa. The ongoing outbreak of Mpox which has been declared as a global health emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO) on August 15, is different from what the world experienced earlier in the 2022 outbreak. The 2022 outbreak was driven by Clade II, which is less virulent, and the infections were primarily seen in men who had sex with other men. Since then, the WHO has reported 99,176 cases and 208 deaths due to Mpox from 116 countries. India detected a total of 30 cases, with the last case in March 2024. The number of cases and deaths has increased significantly this year, with over 15,600 cases and 537 deaths reported so f...
