Photo: AFP / SAUL LOEB Republican Donald Trump and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris immediately went on the offensive in the opening segment of their first presidential debate, each seeking a campaign-altering moment in their closely fought election. Harris, 59, attacked Trump's intention to impose high tariffs on foreign goods - a proposal she has likened to a sales tax on the middle class - while touting her plan to offer tax benefits to families and small businesses. "Donald Trump left us the worst unemployment since the Great Depression," Harris said, referring to his years as president from 2017-2021. Unemployment peaked at 14.8...

Harris-Trump presidential debate takeaways: Dog eating, crowd sizes and abortion battles

Photo: AFP / SAUL LOEB Analysis - As the United States rocks and rolls its way through one of the weirdest presidential election years ever, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump met for their first debate. Here's five quick takeaways on how it all went. Tempting Trump's temper One of Harris's goals was to get under Trump's skin. There's no doubt she managed to rile him a few times, particularly in an exchange where she hit him where it hurts - on crowd sizes. Talking about his rallies, Harris said, "what you'll also notice is that people start leaving his rallies early out of exhaustion and boredom." Trump immediately launched back saying that he has the biggest rallies, and within a sentence or two claimed nobody goes to Harris's events and that people were also being bussed in and paid to go...

Harris puts Trump on defensive in fiery presidential debate

By Nandita Bose, Gram Slattery and Joseph Ax for Reuters The debate was particularly important for Kamala Harris, with opinion polls showing that more than a quarter of likely voters feel they do not know enough about her. Photo: AFP / SAUL LOEB Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris put Republican Donald Trump on the defensive at a combative presidential debate with a stream of attacks on abortion limits, his fitness for office and his myriad legal woes, as both candidates sought a campaign-altering moment in their closely fought election. A former prosecutor, Harris, 59, appeared to get under the former president's skin repeatedly, prompting a visibly angry Trump, 78, to deliver a series of falsehood-filled retorts. At one point, she brought up Trump's campaign rallies, goading hi...

ACC needs to cover $1 billion revenue hole

ACC's motor vehicle fund, work fund, and earners' account are in line for levy rises. Photo: 123rf The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) has revealed a nearly $1 billion hole in revenue will need to be covered when levies are raised next year. ACC says it will need to collect $4.7 billion in levies in the 2025/26 financial year, to fund support for about 930,000 claims on three levy schemes - the motor vehicle fund, the work fund, and the earners' account. In the 2022/23 financial year, ACC brought in just under $3.8 billion in levies from those accounts, and it didn't cover the claims being made. It has signalled levies will need to take a significant jump over coming years in order to cover increasing costs, likely by up to about 20 percent. Consultation is beginning on proposed...

Facebook admits to scraping every Australian adult user’s public photos and posts

By Jake Evans for the ABC (File photo) Photo: NIKOLAS KOKOVLIS / AFP Facebook has admitted that it scrapes the public photos, posts and other data of Australian adult users to train its AI models and provides no opt-out option, even though it allows people in the European Union to refuse consent. Meta's global privacy director Melinda Claybaugh was pressed at an inquiry as to whether the social media giant was hoovering up the data of all Australians in order to build its generative artificial intelligence tools, and initially rejected that claim. Labor senator Tony Sheldon asked whether Meta had used Australian posts from as far back as 2007 to feed its AI products, to which Claybaugh responded "we have not done that".
