A statement from the Scuderia Perez race organisation said Antonio Perez Garibay, 65, would remain under close medical supervision for several days. "Everything happened after the accident," the Mediotiempo website quoted him saying from the hospital. "It may be that the shock of the accident triggered it. They are already checking my heart to see why I fainted." Photo: PHOTOSPORT Perez and Ferrari's Carlos Sainz were battling for third place in Baku when they collided and ended up in the wall, w...

Consumer confidence picks up, job security worries continue

Photo: 123rf Consumer confidence has picked up in recent months as pessimism about the economic outlook begins to ease. The Westpac McDermott Miller Consumer Confidence survey for the September quarter rose 9 points to 90.8 points. However, any reading under 100 indicated pessimistic households outweighed those who were optimistic. Westpac senior economist Satish Ranchhod said the cost-of-living crisis continued to be a drag on retail spending, with an increases in the cost of household utilities, rates, insurance and a range of other financial pressures. While the recent tax cuts may have provided some relief, he said worries about job security continued. "But while many families have been doing it tough, they're now starting to feel a bit more optimistic about the outlook for their own...

Virgin Australia’s questionable firing of gay cabin staffer overturned

Virgin Australia was forced to reinstate the cabin crew member following a ruling by the country's Fair Work Commission. Photo: 123RF/ Ryan Fletcher An Australian airline which fired a staffer after a Grindr hookup while on 'fatigue leave' probably would not have taken such action if he was married and straight, an employment law expert says. Virgin Australia was forced to reinstate the cabin crew member, Dylan Macnish, following a ruling by the country's Fair Work Commission. Macnish was dismissed after the airline obtained hotel CCTV footage and room swipe card records, the Guardian reported, after he had asked for a roster change due to fatigue. During a stressful shift the previous day, he had been urinated on by a passenger suffering a suspected stroke. Early the next morning, Macn...

Six-figure incomes not enough to stop financial stress

Tory Whanau this week admitted that she was "feeling the crunch" and recently sold her car to help pay the bills. Photo: RNZ / Samuel Rillstone High interest rates and the rising cost of council rates and insurance are pushing many high-income earners into financial stress - even when they earn well into six figures. When Wellington mayor Tory Whanau said this week she had sold her car to help pay her bills, some questioned how she was under pressure when she earned $190,000 a year, and had previously won Lotto. But Angela Smart, customer service team lead at helpline MoneyTalks, said Whanau was far from alone. She said there had been a notable increase in higher-income people asking for help with their finances. She estimated 20 percent of clients were people who earned more than avera...

Donald Trump told new security arrangements are needed if he keeps playing golf

By Gram Slattery, Reuters Donald Trump. Photo: Joe Raedle/Getty Images/AFP The head of the Secret Service told Donald Trump in a private meeting that significant new security arrangements will be needed if he wants to keep playing golf, The New York Times reported on Tuesday. Trump asked Ronald Rowe, the Secret Service's acting director, in a meeting on Monday whether it was safe for him to continue playing, the newspaper said. Rowe said the Secret Service views the golf course at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland as easier to secure because it is a military course. That meeting occurred a day after the Secret Service thwarted a second apparent assassination attempt on Trump in less than two months. On Sunday, Secret Service agents fired on Ryan Wesley Routh, the apparent would-be assas...

Consumer NZ wants government to require airlines to tell passengers their consumer rights

Photo: 123rf A consumer advocacy group is backing allegations against Jetstar, saying the law should make it mandatory for airlines to tell customers of their rights. The Commerce Commission is filing charges against Jetstar, saying it discouraged people from seeking compensation when flights were disrupted for reasons within its control in 2022 and 2023. Under the Civil Aviation Act, passengers affected by such disruptions are entitled to claim for costs incurred, such as accommodation, meals and alternative travel. Consumer New Zealand campaigns manager Jessica Walker said her organisation alerted the commission to the problem in 2022 after receiving numerous complaints. "Specifically with Jetstar, we were worried that it was not being upfront about its liability or perhaps throwing ca...

The long hard task of fixing Papua New Guinea’s broken cycle of justice

The police and military in Papua New Guinea are struggling to cope with chronic tribal "revenge killings" among "local terrorists" with high powered weapons in Enga Province. Photo: Supplied In 2022, Papua New Guinea's Parliament unanimously voted to change the country's gun laws making it possible for the courts to impose life sentences on people found to be in possession of illegal firearms. The amendments to the Firearms Act were tabled by Prime Minister James Marape and it came just three years after a previous set of changes. Parliament's decision reflected widespread public sentiments after the brutal mass murder of 16 women and children in James Marape's Hela Province and in the Pogera District of the Enga Province in 2019. Since then, Papua New Guinea, has joined the club of cou...

New study explores factors influencing menstrual cup adoption in Indian women

Price sensitivity, quality, and environmental awareness play a significant role in shaping women`s attitudes toward menstrual cup adoption in India, according to a study by researchers at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Lucknow, on Tuesday. The study, published in the esteemed Journal of Social Marketing, investigates the various factors influencing women`s intentions to adopt menstrual cups. Focusing on how perceived values -- functional, emotional, conditional, epistemic, and environmental -- impact adoption decisions, the team surveyed 304 women. The findings reveal that emotional values had the most significant influence, “suggesting that respondents believe that they are making personal contributions towards sustainability and society by adopting menstrual cups”. This was ...
