`Freedom at Midnight` casting director Kavish Sinha says no awards for them

Finding that one actor, who is right for the role, from a sea of millions is tough. But Kavish Sinha believes that casting directors are the lucky ones who get a ringside view of what it takes to crack Bollywood. “[Aspiring actors] walk into my office and ask, ‘Kuch chal raha hai kya?’ [Months later], the world sees them shining, but we’ve seen the struggles that preceded it,” says the casting director, who recently put together the ensemble for Freedom at Midnight. Kavish Sinha The historical drama sees Sidhant Gupta of Jubilee (2022) fame step into the shoes of Jawaharlal Nehru, while Chirag Vohra and Rajendra Chawla portray Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel respectively. The series could be well another example of OTT bringing merit, over stars, to the fore. Yet, Sinha rues ...

House prices almost 10 times median wage

Photo: RNZ Home affordability is improving almost everywhere in the country, but debt-to-value restrictions means average house prices in the biggest cities will continue to be a stretch for those earning an average income. Massey University's Home Affordability Report indicates there had been a 4.4 percent improvement in the national rate of affordability in the three-month period ended in August, following a trend which began in the last three months of 2023. The report shows the median house price was down in 11 regions, with the greatest decrease being in the West Coast region, where values fell nearly 12 percent or by $48,000. "These latest results have fed into the 0.3 percent decrease in median house prices we've seen overall this year," report author Dr Arshad Javed, from the Mas...

Hurricane Milton exploded into a powerful Category 5 storm as it headed for Florida − here’s how rapid intensification works

By Zachary Handlos and Ali Sarhadi of Photo: AFP / European Space Agency / Handout Hurricane Milton became one of the most rapidly intensifying storms on record as it went from barely hurricane strength to a dangerous Category 5 storm in less than a day on a path across the Gulf of Mexico toward Florida. With sustained winds that reached 180 miles per hour (290km/h) on 7 October 2024, and very low pressure, it also became one of the strongest Atlantic storms. Milton's winds dipped to Category 4 strength early on 8 October but forecasters warned that it would still be an extremely dangerous hurricane at landfall. Australia detects the first case of the highly transmissible Covid-19 strain dubbed XEC

By Joshua Boscaini for ABC Photo: 123rf.com A new highly transmissible variant of Covid-19 has been detected in Australia, raising questions about whether it will lead to a wave of Covid-19 cases over summer. The XEC strain has been reported in 29 countries including the United States, United Kingdom and China, according to global health data platform GISAID. Here's what we know about the XEC variant and how many cases have been reported in Australia. What do we know about XEC? XEC is a "recombinant" Covid-19 variant, which means it's a mix of two previous Omicron subvariants called KS 1.1 and KP 3.3. A recombinant variant is created when someone is infected with two strains of a virus that go on reproduce and create another strain. There are conflicting reports about where the strain...

Here’s how silent stroke can dent your brain health

While silent strokes may not be fatal as a normal brain stroke, it can still affect brain health and lead to cognitive issues such as memory and attention problems, said experts on Monday.  Silent stroke, also known as silent cerebral infarction, can go undetected for years. It does not have symptoms such as sudden weakness, speech difficulties, or facial drooping. It occurs when cerebral blood flow is transiently disrupted, leading to ischemic damage without overt clinical symptoms. However, “the condition can result in subtle neurocognitive deficits, such as memory issues and difficulties with attention, and increased risk of subsequent overt strokes, which are more severe and easily recognisable,” Dr Deepak Yadav, consultant, Neurology, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, said. “Depending o...

Donald Trump didn’t want The Apprentice released before the US election. It’s coming to cinemas this week

Photo: Madman Entertainment By Velvet Winter of the ABC Around the time Ali Abassi was first offered Donald Trump biopic The Apprentice in 2018, the Iranian-born Danish director couldn't actually enter the US due to Trump's infamous travel ban. Warning: This story contains language some readers may find offensive. After jumping through numerous hoops, Abassi was granted entry - temporarily. "I thought it was quite funny having gone through all this, and I was saying, 'If I leave the country, I can't get in again'," Abassi told The Screen Show's Jason Di Rosso. "So maybe I can do this on Zoom. The first feature directed from Zoom." The Apprentice is the semi-biographical story of Donald Trump's ascension through New York's real estate scene in the 80s, and his relationship with lawyer/me...

Defence Minister Yoav Gallant made the announcement about Hashem Safieddine, in what would be the latest shock to Hezbollah's hierarchy, as Israel began ground operations in southwest Lebanon, extending its incursions to a new zone. As Hezbollah's deputy leader left the door open to a negotiated ceasefire, the Israeli m...

‘Evacuate now’ Biden tells those in Hurricane Milton’s path

Contractors put plywood over windows of a building in Tampa on 8 October 2024 ahead of Hurricane Milton’s expected landfall. Photo: AFP US President Joe Biden urged those who have been ordered to leave before Hurricane Milton makes landfall in Florida to "evacuate now", saying it was a matter of life and death. "This could be the worst storm to hit Florida in over a century, and God-willing it won't be, but it's looking like that right now," Biden said. Biden added that he has approved pre-landfall emergency declarations in Florida and is calling on airlines to accommodate evacuations and not engage in price-gouging. Hurricane Milton was expected to enlarge on Wednesday as it grinded past Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula en route to Florida's Gulf Coast, where more than 1 million people were ...

Banks prepare for home loans going bad

Interest rates may be falling - and relatively quickly - but that does not mean the end of New Zealand's mortgage stress, Corelogic is warning. Most borrowers are opting for short-term fixes, which will mean the effect of falling interest rates would be felt relatively quickly, property economist Kelvin Davidson says. Photo: RNZ / Nate McKinnon Property economist Kelvin Davidson said the percentage of "non-performing" loans, which are at least 90 days overdue or considered impaired, had lifted to 0.6 percent of all mortgages. That was the highest level in a decade. Davidson said while it was only about half the rate of 2009 and 2010, it was a concern and could continue to rise because unemployment was increasing. "Based on Reserve Bank figures, the trading banks themselves recently s...
