Red tape, lack of access barriers for aquaculture expansion – NZ King Salmon boss

Only 0.01 percent of New Zealand's 430 million hectare marine economic estate is currently being farmed, the boss of NZ King Salmon says. Photo: Supplied / Emilee Benjamin Leaders in New Zealand's aquaculture sector say the industry's growth has been constrained by bureaucracy and a lack of access to the country's marine estate - as it works toward the government's goal of reaching $3 billion in annual sales in the next decade. At the Aquaculture New Zealand conference in Nelson on Wednesday, NZ King Salmon chief executive Carl Carrington said the opportunity to grow the aquaculture industry was huge, with only 0.01 percent of New Zealand's 430 million hectare marine economic estate currently being farmed. "As a nation, we have made it incredibly difficult to gain access to farm the sea...

Coffee, tea may prevent heart attack and stroke risk in lupus patients: Study

Consuming more caffeine, present in coffee, tea, and cocoa may improve heart health in people with lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, according to a study on Wednesday.  Patients with inflammatory rheumatic diseases, such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, are at higher risk of heart attack and stroke. This is both due to the disease and some treatments for them, particularly cortisone derivatives. To date, these patients were given conventional recommendations like quitting smoking, reducing cholesterol, and controlling high blood pressure, the new study published in the journal Rheumatology, added drinking caffeine to the list to boost their heart health. Researchers from Sapienza University of Rome, in Italy, suggested that caffeine, present in coffee, tea, and cocoa, actively helps end...

John Farnham’s voice heard for the first time publicly in years

John Farnham, pictured here in 2002, has a new memoir out next month. Photo: GREG WOOD A short audio trailer of Australian legend John Farnham reading his memoir The Voice Inside has been released. It's the first time the 75-year-old singer's voice has been heard since he was diagnosed with throat cancer 2022. "I don't enjoy talking about myself, I really don't. Don't get me wrong, I'm an egomaniac," he says in the audio clip released by the book's publisher Hachette ahead of its release later this month. "But dredging up the past and picking through what has and hasn't been is just not something I've ever really enjoyed. I'll try to share as much as I can, but that's not easy because I've never really been that open. I guess there are reasons for that. Reasons for my reluctance." The m...

Reserve Bank gives in to pressure with massive OCR cut

Photo: RNZ RBNZ bows to pressure and makes big cash rate cut RBNZ says was a toss up between 25 and 50 basis point cut Economy weak and subdued because of high rates RBNZ gives little away on the next move, but another 50 bps expected in November Analysis - Over the decades the Reserve Bank has been keen to emphasise its independence and remind financial markets and the economic chattering classes that it's in control. But its latest decision to slash the OCR by 50 basis points to an 18-month low of 4.75 percent has all the hallmarks of bending with the prevailing wind, which had been gathering hurricane force in the past week. The short statement and summary of the meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) said the double sized cut was justified by the subdued and weak econom...

Australia waives diplomatic immunity for man embroiled in Wellington street fight

First published on The partner of an Australian diplomat has been denied diplomatic immunity after a alleged fight in Wellington. Photo: AFP Australia has waived diplomatic immunity for a man accused of an early-morning assault in Wellington CBD. It comes after new video emerged yesterday of the partner of an Australian diplomat allegedly yelling a homophobic slur at police before loudly claiming he has "diplomatic immunity" during a fight in central Wellington last month. A man was taken into custody following an "altercation" between three people on Dixon St in Wellington about 3.30am on Sunday, 29 September - just hours after the All Blacks played the Wallabies in the Bledisloe Cup in the capital city. Reduction in official cash rate likely to help housing market.

File pic Photo: 123RF The Reserve Bank's decision to cut the official cash rate by 50 basis points, to 4.75 percent, will help the property market, but house prices may still only increase slowly from here. Chief economist at property data firm CoreLogic, Kelvin Davidson, said the key point for the housing market was the home loan interest rates were likely to continue to drop. "This could easily produce a short-term lift in confidence and a more active housing market as we hit the normal spring uplift anyway." But he said while house prices might stop falling in the near future, there were reasons why an upward surge was not likely. Housing affordability was still stretched and there were a lot of listings to choose from, he said. "But perhaps the most important restraint right now is ...

Why Fiji’s new anti-corruption commissioner was arrested on her first day in the job

By Max Walden and Fiji reporter Lice Movono, ABC Fiji's coalition government continues to struggle at bringing democratic processes back after 16 years of dictatorship. (Supplied) Photo: ABC/Supplied Even by Fijian standards of high political drama, the arrest of the country's new anti-corruption commissioner on her first day in the job was extraordinary. The government announced Barbara Malimali's appointment as head of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) in early September. By the next morning, she was being questioned by police after being detained on the direction of her own acting deputy commissioner, Francis Puleiwai. Barbara Malimali says she wants to be able to protect Fiji from corrupt public officials. (X: Fiji Women) Photo: X/Fiji Women Claims ...
