Prioritising needs of children necessary and urgent: UNICEF on Mpox outbreak

As the World Health Organisation (WHO) asks countries to step up vigil against Monkeypox (Mpox), the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) has also sounded an alert, saying that in the fight against the outbreak, prioritising the needs of children is not only necessary but urgent. A new variant of the mpox virus (clade Ib) is causing concern due to its potential for wider transmission across age groups, including young children. Mpox is affecting thousands of children across Africa. According to the global humanitarian body, children who are malnourished or affected by other illnesses are also vulnerable to complications from mpox. The virus can spread through contact with lesions on the skin or infectious bodily fluids; contact with contaminated materials such as clothing, linen or s...

OCR cut: ‘Kiwis have a love affair with property’ – buyer enquiries increase

Photo: RNZ The reduction in the official cash rate is flowing through to the property market with improved buyer sentiment. A new property report from realestate.co.nz shows buyer enquiries increased by 8.5 percent in August in the fortnight following last month's OCR cut to 5.25 percent. The national average asking price dipped to $844,595 in August, the lowest in three-and-a-half years, with a further a 0.5 percent decrease from July and a 3.4 percent decrease from August 2023. Stock levels remain high increasing across the country by 30 percent year-on-year in August. August also marked a return to seasonal listing trends, according to realestate.co.nz chief executive Sarah Wood. "The rise in new listings suggests that vendors view this as a favourable time to sell, likely in response...

By Emily Rose and Nidal al-Mughrabi, Reuters Photo: Gili Yaari / NurPhoto via AFP Dozens of thousands of Israelis protest against the Israeli government, calling for the immediate release of the hostages still held by Hamas in Gaza, outside the Ministry of Defence in Tel Aviv, Israel, on 1 September 2024. Protests gripped Israel on Sunday following the death of six hostages in Gaza as frustration mounted with the country's leadership for failing to secure a ceasefire deal that would free Israeli captives. Crowds estimated by Israeli media to number up to 500,000 strong demonstrated in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and other cities, demanding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu do more to bring home the remaining 101 hostages. Israel estimates about a third of them are dead. Labour leaders ...

Retirement village development still not enough to meet demand

Summerset by the Park Rest Home in Flatbush. Photo: Google A report on the state of retirement villages highlights regional inequities and a critical shortage in the number of aged care units, despite a recent ramp-up in development. Property management firm JLL's latest Retirement Villages Market Review to the year ended December 2023, indicates there needed to be a significant increase in the rate of development to meet future demand. "New Zealand's retirement village sector has shown remarkable growth over the past decade, reflecting the increasing demand from our ageing population," JLL head of research Gavin Read said. "However, the findings of our review underscore the importance of strategic planning and development to ensure that future demand can be met." Development falls behi...

Germany’s far right set to gain in eastern regional vote

By Riham Alkousaa and Sarah Marsh, Reuters Alice Weidel, leader of the AfD parliamentary group, speaks a day before the state elections in Thuringia. Photo: AFP / DPA The Alternative for Germany (AfD) was on track on Sunday to become the first far-right party to win a regional election in Germany since WWII, projections showed, but was almost certain to be excluded from power by rival parties. The AfD was set to win 33.1 percent of the vote in the state of Thuringia, comfortably ahead of the conservatives' 24.3 percent, broadcaster ZDF's projection showed. In the neighbouring state of Saxony, the conservatives led on 31.9 percent, around half a percentage point ahead of the AfD. With a year to go until Germany's national election, the results look punishing for Social Democrat Chance...

Downed tools leave Auckland’s Seascape an empty shell

Seascape was meant to be New Zealand's highest residential building. But construction has stopped, thanks to a feud between the builder and developer.  Builders working on Auckland's Seascape tower were told to down tools in late August. Photo: Sharon Brettkelly It is being marketed as the "very best lifestyle imaginable" by Sotheby's real estate, an architectural masterpiece due for completion by "Q2 2024". But that date has come and gone and the Seascape tower in downtown Auckland sits unfinished after work was shut down last month over a dispute between the developer and the builder. The empty building site on Customs Street East is closed off and guarded by security workers, with no word on when work will restart. There is no mention of that on either Sotheby's or on Seas...

Chronic diseases can increase risk of inflammation, cognitive decline: Experts

During inflammation, the body`s cells fight and contain the infection. As a result, certain mediators or chemicals are released, which trigger reactions in the surrounding areas causing localised inflammation, often accompanied by pain or swelling. “Inflammation of the brain tissue caused by an overactive immune response or a long-standing i...
