Thrill of the chase: Meet the Kiwis chasing storms across the US

Steve Burrows in Dodge City, Kansas, in 2016. The New Zealander has been chasing storms since 2003. Photo: Supplied Steve Burrows remembers the day he was hit by a tornadic waterspout. It was 2014, and he and his friend had just tracked down a waterspout forming out from the Ashburton river mouth. The pair watched it from the safety of their car as it swirled and swirled - and then, it broke on the shoreline. "It hit us and you could actually feel the back of the car lifting up. It got smashed with pebbles and everything, and when the wind picked up we could feel the back of the car bouncing up and down." To most people, getting caught in a storm probably sounds like a nightmare. But for Burrows, it was a moment of pure adrenaline - all part of the territory of being a storm chaser. ...

History shows Nasdaq bull market could return 10% plus next year

The Nasdaq Composite index finally made a new all-time high on Friday, its first since July. But history shows there may be more than 10% upside ahead as stocks enter the third year of a bull market, according to DataTrek statistics. DataTrek co-founders Nicholas Colas and Jessica Rabe said they "remain bullish" on U.S. large-cap tech stocks because the average third year of a bull market has brought an increase of just 4.4% for the tech-heavy Nasdaq, the firm's data shows. But that rally jumps to 13% when looking only at years without major shocks. In some instances, investors saw gains of as much as 20% in those third years. .IXIC 5Y mountain The Nasdaq Composite over the past 5 years The only caveat is that outcome assumes no major shake-ups to the economic or geopolitical backdrop. Keir Starmer reversing the proposed smoking ban may save flirting as we know it

Plus, not to get all LinkedIn about it, but think of all the lost networking. The jobs, the phone numbers shared, the “Oh, you know ****? I worked with her for years”. Revealing oneself as a smoker sheds a level of professionalism and invites someone in. Marathi actor Priya Bapat: ‘There’s always pressure to prove yourself’

Despite delivering a hit with Nagesh Kukunoor’s City of Dreams (2019), Marathi actor Priya Bapat had to wait before the Hindi film industry recognised her potential. This year, however, she enjoys a string of releases—from Riteish Deshmukh-starrer Visfot and friendship drama Raat Jawaan Hai to the anthology on mental health, Zindaginama, on SonyLIV. Happy about the change in tide, Bapat says, “This is the first time since I started working in Hindi that I’ve had three massive releases.” The actor shares she has often rejected several projects while waiting for the right scripts.  “Even in Marathi cinema, I choose my work consciously. I’ve had to wait a lot for the right kind of projects and avoid getting typecast. After City of Dreams, I was offered many lesbian roles. But when makers bel...
