Japanese village replaces young people with mannequins to stave off loneliness as population falls | World News

The small population of a village in Japan is now "outnumbered by puppets" - after using life-like mannequins to replace those who have left the area.Fewer than 60 people live in the southern village of Ichinono - with most of them past retirement age, as younger people have moved away for jobs or education. In an effort to heal feelings of loneliness that can come after the departure of neighbours or loved ones, the villagers have used old clothes, fabrics and mannequins to stitch together a new population of puppets.A mannequin girl wearing a beanie hat can be seen swaying gently on a wooden swing, while her friend, a boy with a big smile, stands on a scooter, ready to go.Another puppet girl in a red helmet is seen sitting on a bike nearby. Meanwhile, under leafless trees in another part...

Jack and Michael Whitehall: ‘We push each other’s buttons in a comedic way’

Michael Whitehall and his son Jack are the stars of Travels With My Father. Photo: BOHM The loving banter between British comedian Jack Whitehall and his elderly dad Michael has been winning over Netflix audiences since 2017. At their live shows in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland in January, Michael will surely dip into his "vast back-catalogue of anecdotes and stories and tall tales", Jack says, and there will also be plenty of spontaneity. "It'll be a slightly chaotic, hopefully amusing evening of watching a father and son on stage," he tells RNZ's Jim Mora. Jack Whitehall says he has got a lot better at travelling in the seven years since he and his dad first shot Travels With My Father, but much of it has been "solitary". In Aotearoa, he and Michael - a former theatrical agen...

Global climate action plans ‘falling miles short’, warns UN | Science, Climate & Tech News

Global climate action plans are "falling miles short" of what is needed to stop climate change from "crippling" economies, the United Nations has warned.Current national climate plans submitted by 168 nations to the UN will see global emissions of greenhouse gases in 2030 just 2.6% lower than in 2019, a new report has found. This marks only "marginal progress" since the same annual "Synthesis" report last year, when 2030 emissions were forecast to be 2.0% lower than in 2019.And it is "only a fraction" of what is "urgently needed", it said, given emissions should plummet 43% by 2030 in order to stave off the worst impacts of climate change, as per the advice from UN climate science body the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).The UN's climate change chief Simon Stiell said: "Th...

Police out in force to prevent rowdy Halloween celebrations in Shanghai

Halloween parade in Shanghai on 31 October 2023. Photo: CFOTO / NurPhoto via AFP Shanghai police patrolled the downtown streets over the weekend to crack down on Halloween celebrations in China's most international city. Local authorities appeared to be trying to prevent a repeat of last year, when Halloween revellers thronged central Shanghai, with some dressed in costumes that poked fun of the Chinese stock market, youth unemployment and strict COVID-19 policies. This weekend, the police presence, online postings about a crackdown and constant rain kept the revelry to a minimum. At least half a dozen people in costumes that turned up in Shanghai's Zhongshan park on Friday night were seen by Reuters witnesses being led away by police. There was no official city-wide notice banning Hall...

A shock parliamentary election result in Japan has left the country in political limbo, after its ruling coalition suffered a rare defeat with no party winning enough seats to be given a clear mandate to lead.Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its junior coalition partner Komeito secured 215 seats in the lower house of parliament - 233 seats are needed to form a majority. The main opposition, the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDPJ) won 148 seats, up from 98 previously.Under the constitution, the parties now have 30 days to try to form a coalition government. There could be days or weeks of political jockeying ahead. The LDP's coalition still has a majority in the less powerful upper house. The result is a major setback for Mr Ishiba, who only beca...

Trump unveils the most extreme closing argument in modern presidential history

By Stephen Collinson, CNN Former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump arrives to speak during a campaign rally at Madison Square Garden in New York, 27 October 2024. Photo: ANGELA WEISS / AFP Analysis - Donald Trump anchored his bid to win a second White House term next week on searing anti-migrant fear at a rally at Madison Square Garden, doubling down on his promise for a massive deportation program on Day 1 to reverse an "immigrant invasion." As the ex-president's allies defend him against Democratic claims he is a "fascist" and an authoritarian in waiting, based in part on warnings by his ex-chief of staff John Kelly, Trump on Sunday delivered a screed that may augur the most extreme presidency in modern history if he beats Democratic nominee Kamala Har...

An evocation of Nazism? Of course it was, and of course it wasn't.Like everything else in this election, the narrative cuts both ways. It's a stage for the big event and lends cachet to a candidate closing out his campaign, no doubt. In appearing at MSG, Donald Trump writes himself on to the same Wikipedia page as the New York Knicks, several hundred rock concerts and two of the three Ali-Frazier fights. What’s the secret to why dogs love life? A philosopher reflects on the joy of life for a dog

It's a dogs life: Why are dogs so universally happy at the smallest of things? Photo: Rhonwyn Newson Ever wonder why dogs seem to be having so much fun all the time? Philosophy can tell us something about it - and why we're a bit different, an American academic says. In his new book, The Happiness of Dogs: Why the Unexamined Life Is Most Worth Living, Welsh author and philosopher, professor Mark Rowlands explores a dog's view of the world, and cites the likes of Camus, Dylan Thomas, Plato and Socrates. He argues a dog's capacity for joy underlies some key differences between us - and maybe why happiness is more difficult for people, in a conversation with RNZ. Rowlands' best-known work is his international best-seller The Philosopher and the Wolf, about a decade where he lived with Bre...
