By Velvet Winter, ABC Entertainment Fran Kranz, Chris Hemsworth, and Anna Hutchison, starring in The Cabin in the Woods (2011). Photo: Lionsgate Inc It's October, which means it's spooky season. But for some, October means avoiding film trailers and turning down movie night invites for fear of something too monstrous on screen. I see you, and I understand. Although the genre once petrified me, I can now watch films like Longlegs and Alien: Romulus in cinemas and I only cover my eyes a little bit (during the gory parts). So if you've always wanted to dive into horror without getting the wits scared out of you, let me introduce you to the films that helped me ease into the genre. UK budget to give health service huge boost, at a cost

Rachel Reeves. Photo: PAUL ELLIS / AFP Britain's finance minister Rachel Reeves will announce billions of pounds in funding for the National Health Service (NHS) in Wednesday's (local time) budget that will go towards buying new equipment for hospitals and increasing the number of operations. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said tax rises will be necessary to rebuild Britain's public services, pledging no return to austerity despite a difficult fiscal inheritance after Labour won a July election. "I am putting an end to the neglect and under investment (the NHS) has seen for over a decade now," Reeves said on Monday. "We will be known as the government that took the NHS from its worst crisis in its history, got it back on its feet again and made it fit for the bright future ahead of it....

Hajdu won’t say if non-Indigenous companies should pay back Indigenous contracts – National

Canada’s Indigenous Services minister refused to say Monday if non-Indigenous companies that won contracts by claiming to be Indigenous should pay back the value of contracts that were meant for First Nations, Inuit or Métis businesses. Under questioning by Conservative MPs during a parliamentary committee meeting, Patty Hajdu repeatedly stressed the value of the Indigenous Business Directory – a database of companies connecting Indigenous businesses to the lucrative world of federal contracts.A months-long Global News investigation, in partnership with researchers at First Nations University of Canada, raised questions about whether some of those companies are truly owned and controlled by Indigenous people. The investigation revealed significant loopholes in the Procurement Strategy for I...

High-intensity workouts more beneficial for weight loss in women, finds study

Exercising to lose weight? High-intensity physical workouts may be more beneficial, especially for women, according to a study. The study, published in the Journal of the Endocrine Society, showed that more than moderate exercise, and engaging in vigorous physical activity like jumping rope, swimming, and cycling can suppress hunger levels in healthy adults. The small study noted that females may be more susceptible to this response. Researchers from the University of Virginia in the US showed that the effect is due to ghrelin -- a hormone that stimulates appetite. They noted that hunger levels are significantly reduced after high-intensity exercise, as compared to moderate-intensity exercise or control (no exercise). Lead author Kara Anderson, from the varsity, noted that people felt ...

Is it ever OK to cut the mould off food and eat the rest?

By Anna Chisholm for the ABC Experts say while mould can be cut away from some foods, it's often better to discard food that has visible mould. Photo: Tim Hester Have you ever been tempted to cut off a mouldy corner of cheese? You might be throwing together a last-minute meal and trying to avoid a trip to the shops. Or maybe one of your parents would insist it was "still good". But is it? Here's what experts had to say about whether food that has gone a little mouldy is ever really "still good". Can you cut around mould? It depends. Food safety scientist at the CSIRO Rozita Vaskoska says, "you can only cut the mould off if the food is really hard." Vaskoska uses the example of a hard cheese, and says some hard fruit and veg might also fit into this category. Whenever the food is soft...
